I dance to most things with a good fast beat. I hate the side stepping type of dancing. I love a bit of disco, ska, salsa, club (not really garage etc.) When I go out I want to burn up calories and alcohol, not side step myself into a coma.

I can't understand how DJ's can stand or sit behind decks all night not having a bit of a boogie now and then. If I wouldn't want to dance to it, why would anyone else?

Is this a man thing ?

Are there any men out there that like to dance ? 533.gif

Dynamicdiscos
Leonna - It is a man thing if they do dance they don't do it well.

I can't resist a boogie behind the decks biggrin.gif
Mo The Motown Man
Hold up it may be a man THING but some of us can / used to be able to dance in the year 196? I was all England Jive and Disco dance Champion toot.gif 1106.gif
YourBigEvent
How could you be All England Jive and Disco champion in 196?, when disco didn't come around until 197?

??????????? biggrin.gif

I "move around to the music" behind the decks all night - I'm not sure you could call it dancing! I never sit down.

I agree completely, and I'm sure customers think the same too. Therefore all night I move about and smile and look like I'm having a great time - even if I hate the music! It's all part of building the atmosphere and excitement levels up.
YourBigEvent
I didn't say I didn't smile and move about, thats all part of the show, I just don't dance.
dj007

Songs like Amii Stewart's Knock On Wood, and
Edwin Starr's Contact.

Always make me feel happy and in the mood for a boogie!

Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl' seldom fails to fill the floor for me. I'm more likely to get up up and dance to Freestylers 'Push Up'. I just find that track still works for me.

My general rule is to play tunes to get the ladies dancing, then the men will start dancing 'cos they want to dance with the ladies.

So when guys ask me for Hip-Hop, I tend not to play those tracks because I know the men won't dance to them and the women don't want to dance to them (generally). But if I play R&B, then the women want to dance to it and even if the men would rather listen to Hip-Hop, they will dance to R&B because all the women are on the dance floor!

Always dance behind the decks but dont understand how female djs do it unless they have their handbags on the floor of the box and dance around them rolleyes.gif wouldnt say not being able to dance was a man thing i quite often see females on the dancefloor that are so out of time they put you off your mixing ! Must admit music has become a tool of the trade so am glad i do mostly club work and can dance around to newer music instead of the older stuff. !

I think this was a genuine thread and we may be guilty of not taking it too seriously.

I am going to give the thread a bit of support.

2 tracks stand out for me:

Darude - Sandstorm
Underworld - born slippy

Never fail to fill the floor unless I'm doing a 60th! I also move around behind the decks - if you beat mix, you need to 'feel the beat', and moving to it is an excellent way of getting your timing for the mix. I cant mix standing dead still.

Feel slightly vindicated now that you have put these down as your floor fillers after I was slated by others for suggesting it on your earlier Urban Music thread.

Do these go down well under general parties or just younger people?

Maybe this is another thread, but do you think DJ's play it safe sometimes ?

Sometimes when I have been to corporate parties with loads of different age groups I have asked for something more clubby. DJ tends to reply it wouldn;t go down well, or people are happy dancing to this sort of stuff. But invariably there are loads of people still sitting down, what about them, maybe they are waiting for 'their type of music' to be played?

Personally I love there to be a good mix of different types of music when I go out all types, rock n roll, disco, funk, rnb, salsa, old skool, commercial dance, Trance etc. It would be nice to go to a party and have the DJ play something a bit different. But then maybe I am just weird biggrin.gif
brianmole
I think it's because Darude - Sandstorm is definately not Urban music, I should not worry about it!
Sandstorm and Born Slippy work for me at most functions such as weddings, 40th, 30th, 21st, 18th, etc... They do not work for me at anything over a 50th because they are a little too heavy for the 'grey haired generation'. I usually save these track to near the end of the evening, they are also often requested.

A good mixture of music is exactly what works for me, unless it is a specific requirement of the promoter/person who is paying.

Use darude quite often but my favourite floor fillers are
Modjo -Lady
Faithless -Insomnia
DJ SPARKO
many funky 70s stuff always work for me the only one that would vishelly tempt me to break out on the floor and get down to would be the tramps; disco inferno (yes i know).

Hi Leonna - I didn't mean my message to come across as a "slating".

My point was simply that Sandstorm isn't "urban music" and that was how my comment was meant.

I think it's to do with the style of the night, rather than the age of the people. When I play to an "urban music" crowd, they are expecting a certain sort of music (R&B, Hip-Hop, Dancehall) and a track like Sandstorm or Born Slippy would clear the dance floor. I mean, plenty of the people I know who are really dismissive of dance music are young (like early 20's). That's why, for example, they go to R&B nights (rather than general club nights) so they don't hear dance music.

My favourite floor filler at the moment:

Tiffany - "I think we're alone now"

As previously stated, some "banker" tracks will clear the floor if played to the wrong punters. It's down to experience / observation to judge what will "go".

Don't dismiss anything "charty" to an older crowd - some fortysomething ladies still like "Push the button" and "Don't cha", cos it's what their daughters dance to, and they might as well pinch their tunes as they are already pinching their fashions! (Anybody else see this phenomenon - the elder element dressing much more trendy/younger nowadays?).

I'm another non-dancer. I used to DJ at a pub 3 nights a week for 10 years, & didn't even stand behind the disco, I sat on a high stool. But I prefer to stand now.
