Hi all, I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. I am booked to do a young lady's 18th. She has requested some dance, some cheese, and a big load of urban. I have most of the tracks requested, but I always like to try and bring a bit of the club to these young adults, so I would really appreciate a bit of advice if you are a club DJ doing loads of upfront stuff....

What is blowing up in the following genres on your dancefloors right now?

R&B
Hip-hop
Drum 'n' bass
Dancehall
Garage

Cheers, Brian

A couple more that are working for me and not been mentioned yet:
  • Lighters up - Lil Kim
  • Window Shopper - 50 Cent
  • Ever Blazin - Sean Paul

RobbieD
Some Great Tunes listed above, but you may want to also include some of the newer stuff (the first two are essential):

Sean Paul - Ever Blazin' (BIG BIG Tune!!!)

50 Cent - Window Shopper (Expect to get requested lots)

Lil Kim - Lighters Up (Big Tune!)

Pussycat Dolls - Stickwitu (May get requested, but may not dance - that's what happened to me - Down Tempo, but still good)

Eminem - When I'm Gone (I've not had requestes yet, but Kiss is playing this lots, so you know the kids will love it)

John Legend ft. Lauryn Hill - So High (Remix) (Not sure how popular this is, but getting lots of airplay, and is quality!)

they love to listen , but you cant dance to it ....... its not fun like some of his older work
Dynamicdiscos
Yeah I have been experiencing this a lot lately where I get requests for songs so many times in and evening but you can't dance to them.
BigBen
Not trying to be the forum ogre or anything but I hate just about every song listed in this thread. I find this kind of music stunningly bad. Apologies to those of you who love it, I'm not trying to upset or offend - it is just my opinion.

You have to admit some of it is pretty pooh.gif But I like quite a lot of it.

I will be thinking about you enjoying yourself whilst I am away all weekend on a grueling army training weekend. Shooting things, running around in the cold and dark and sleeping on a bard matress (Urgh!) without my cuddly cat sad.gif

Why don't you try some more what is probably classed as 'commercial dance' or maybe Old Skool Club Classics.

How about:-

Sandstorm by Darude
Zombie Nation by Kernkraft
Logical Song by Scooter (my kids love this but then they are only 6 and 11)
Set you Free - N-Trance
No Limits - 2 Unlimited - good fun dance you can get them to do with this - actions can be provided.

With a some good lasers etc. I love having a bop to these ones.

Can't 100% agree with Big Ben

Never heard of any of them thats why. laugh.gif

Plain Awful:

Sean Paul - We be burnin
Lighters up - Lil Kim

Appallingly bad (what a waste of Gwens talent):
Pharrell & Gwen Stefani - Can I have it like that

some1 told me that dr pressure was a song written and unrealeased /or sung by (not sure) donna summer? this right, cos the video looks like its from the 1980's?

Dr Pressure is a Mash up of the mighty Mylo - drop the pressure from last year, and the Miami sound machine (ft Gloria Estefan yucky.gif ) - Doctor Beat which was a hit in the mid 80's.

They might be great songs, but the original post wasn't asking for that genre.

I'd get lynched if I played some of those tracks!

I thought from Brian's requested he wanted something a bit less popish, which if it is in the charts it is, and something that would go down better in a 'club'. Without going down the hard core Brighton/Ibiza Club scene (Hip/Hop, Garage, Drum n Bass) I thought these might have been a 'gentler' introduction than some of the stuff they might get there.

As someone who goes clubbing in Brighton a fair bit, none of those listed previous to mine would have got played in a serious Brighton 'club'. Even my suggestions would only have been likley to be played in Paradox or Event II as they are too commercial.

Sorry Brian if I have been barking up the wrong tree. hide.gif

I have to admit I'm a huge Gloria Esefan Fan and was really chuffed when Mylo released this. It's a fantastic track.

You think theyre bad yes - but with students into their Urban music theyre absolute hits.

I play to a room of 800 every week and the biggest 3 tracks at the moment are

Gold Digger
Can I have it like that
My Humps

Theyre asked for more times than a pint is asked for at the bar.

They wouldnt be on Radio 1's A-List if they were that bad. He was asking for suggestions for what would go down well at his particular party based on what young people are dancing to at the moment - and what is popular in Urban music - youve just listed your opinion which I dont think he was after.

Sorry... love you really BigBen kid.gif
Dave80s
how about:

Pharell - Angel
Damian Marley - The Master Has Come Back
Gwen Stefani feat Slim Thug - Luxurious
Rhymefest - Brand New
Rihanna - If Its Lovin That You Want
Kanye West - Heard Em Say
Goldie Lookin Chain - RnB!

Thanks for all the suggestions, thanks to Leonna for popping in, good to meet you smile.gif

I started off doing current clubbby house as background really, then at 9pm I started the dancing with Roll Deep. The whole night contained NO CHEESE or POP notworthy.gif thumbup.gif which makes a real change for once. I played mainly RnB, hip-hop, old school, and a couple of DnB classics, together with a surprising selection of big house anthems.

Biggest surprise request:
Barthez - on the move notworthy.gif

Some of the other big house anthems (not urban) I got out in 1 mixed set (not in this order):
Insomnia (Mike Finnegan mix) - Player One
Sandstorm - Darude
Cafe del Mar - Energy 52
D.E.V.I.L - 666
Operation Blade - Public Domain
Born Slippy - Underworld
Silence - Delirium

I also played these which had a wicked reaction:
Out of space - Prodigy
Dr Pressure - MYLO vs MSM ft GE

Now on to the Urban stuff I was asking about, this lot went down really REALLY well:
My lumps - BEP (played twice)
Lighters up - Lil' Kim
It's like that - Mariah Carey
It's like that - Rihanna
Pon de replay - Rihanna
We be burnin' - Sean Paul
Grind with me - Pretty Ricky
Rock ya body MC12.. - MVP
Can I have it like that - Pharrell / Gwen Stephani
Fire - Lethal Bizzle
Gold digger - Kanye West & JF
Nookie - Jamesey P
You can do it - Ice Cube
Tipsy - J-Kwon
Dirty Harry - Gorillas
Bootystition - Destiny's Child vs Stevie Wonder
Can't Lick you outta my bed - Kylie vs Ludacris
Window Shopper - 50 Cent

Absolutely wicked night, loads of atmosphere, I came away really buzzing. smile.gif thumbup.gif
BigBen
Looks like you had a good 'un Brian! Great photo.

Interesting - I sometimes think that we have different ideas of what we mean when we say the same things. Maybe it's location or different clubs or whatever. When I read the original post and saw words like "urban", "hip-hop" and "dancehall", I thought this was along the lines of some of the parties I play. So, I came up with some tunes which are working for me (which were also the ones Robbie picked, so I figured I couldn't be too far out).

Now I've read your comments about Brighton clubs and seen Brian's photos, I realise that I was actually quite a way out. Looks like a very different crowd to the ones I'm used to.

Having said that, looks like I'd have played most of the same tunes from Brian's "urban stuff" list. But I would never have played any of the stuff from the "big house" list. Instead, the other stuff I'd have played would have been more along the lines of Beenie Man, Sizzla, Mr Vegas, Elephant Man, some Usher, R. Kelly, Biggie, Snoop, Pitbull - that sort of thing.

014.gif Sorry I couldn't stay til the end - hubby and kids need to see me occasionaly biggrin.gif

Glad you got the old Sandstorm out, just sorry I missed it.

Looks like they had loads of fun.

Well Ian, I was interested in what I term URBAN, which to me is:

RnB
Hip-hop
Drum n bass
UK Garage
Dancehall

The rest is defo not URBAN.

I definately wouldnt call rnb urban anymore, more mainstream if you ask me unless you mean real rnb !
FrankieJ
My kind of night Brian, looks like they had a good night.

Most of the above list is fairly commercial, Eminem has gone very commercial now which is a shame and looks like 50 could be heading that way too.

Still would love to do a club night where you can play:

NWA
Ludacris
Public Enemy
K Solo
Redman
Epmd
Jay Z
Ice Cube
Ice T
Lil Kim
Das Efx
KRS One
2 Pac
DMX
Foxy Brown
Nas
MOP
Wu Tang
Biggie ... etc etc

Now were a talking hardcore Rap Music....arrrr Heaven notworthy.gif

When people say "urban music" they really mean "black music" but don't want to use that term either because they are worried about political correctness (if you are after a generous interpretation) or because they don't want to credit black people with having created such influential music (if you are being cynical).

So I don't think it matters how mainstream RnB gets, it's still urban music!

Politics rant over ... back to your scheduled discussion about music. biggrin.gif
Leonna
What makes a song RnB, Hip/Hop, Garage, Trance, Jazz, Latin, Disco, Waltz etc?

In the olden days was it not easier to 'class' music. I am not a musician so not sure, but it may have been to do with the beat of the music and maybe the style.

I have no idea how to class most songs, my classes are I like it or I don't like it.

It would be nice to know what sort of music you could expect when you see clubs saying funky soul or Hard House etc. Maybe it is just a sign of getting old 014.gif

brianmole
071.gif As a 41 year old, I can understand what you are saying.

For me, part of learning to mix has helped me id differing music types. Most of it is to do with the construction of the drum patterns and the tempo/BPM of the music. This is the sort of thing that the SEDA mixing workshops were covering, and I can happily go through the genres with you if you want to learn more.

I can also recommend a 10 week course, 2 hours per week, every Tuesday or Wednesday at 7pm I think, in Guildford which is only £250, and possibly the best £250 I spent a few years ago. It is/was taught by the highly respected Mixdoctor - Les Adams (LA Mix, DMC, etc....) and you can find more info here - look for the DJ skills part time courses. thumbup.gif

The latter goes into every aspect of DJing in good depth, well worth it.
Leonna
Looks good. Might have a go next year after xmas done and dusted.
ian
That looks good - makes me wish I lived nearer Guildford!
