In my humble opinion my advice is NEVER rely on pure Motown records for a "Motown Session" - you'll struggle to keep the floor filled for more than 2 or 3 tracks. Much better to announce a Soul & Motown session - go for a mix of Motown, Philly, Stax, Atlantic and mix 60's with 70's. The choice is awesome and you can go on for ages. Whilst Motown is brilliant it is very 'distinctive' and to some it can become boring after 3 or 4 tracks. Some absolute blinders to mix with Motown are;
Start with:
Loco in Acapulco - 4 Tops (fills the floor every time!)
Working my way back to you - Detroit Spinners
Zing went the strings - Trammps
Hold back the night - Trammps
Sweetest feeling - Jackie Wilson
Heaven is missing an angel - Tavares
Out on the floor - Dobie Gray
Let's go round again - Average White band
1st last everything - Barry White
Lots of Billy ocean - Carribean Queen, get outta my car,
Kool & gang - ladies Night
Right back - Maxine Nightingale
My man a sweet man - Millie jackson
Don;t take away the music - tavares
Love train - Ojays
I will survive - Gloria Gaynor
I love to love - tina Charles
Saturday night at the movies - Drifters
These Motown tracks can be mixed in between the above records
Two can have a party - marvin & Tammi
It takes two - Marvin & Kim Weston
I got a feeling - Barbara Randolph
Dancing In The Street - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Reach Out I'll Be There - The Four Tops
Stop! In The Name Of Love - The Supremes
The Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
My Guy - Mary Wells
Baby Love - The Supremes
Jimmy Mack Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
How sweet it is - Jnr Walker, The All Stars
This Old Heart Of Mine & Behind a painted Smile - The Isley Brothers
Nowhere To Run Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
He Was Really Sayin' Something - The Velvelettes
Needle in a haystack - Vlevellettes
I Can't Help Myself - The Four Tops
be young foolish happy - The Tams
Little misunderstanding - Contours
Altogether I have 99 floorfillers in my 60's soul dance classics and 76 in my 70's soul dance classics collection = 175 tracks at 2.5 minutes each = over 7 hours if I played them all! - This doesn't include Northern Soul classics (67 tracks) but they are reserved for the more discerning crowd - another 3 hours worth - all great dance tracks. For example;
Dance dance dance - Casualeers
Do I love you - Frank Wilson
Love is a serious business - Alfie davison
The beat, Right Track, 1 wonderful moment, Ain;t no doubt about it..etc.etc - I could go on and on .........Long after tonight is all over - Jimmy Radcliffe (THE classic soul finish!)
