Hi folks

Just posting for a rant and a moan.

As part of a promotional strategy for my February DJ world record thing, and to raise more money for Dreamflight, I'm in the process or organising a Charity Xmas party at the Leisure Centre in Daventry.

Me and Darren jeffs, the guy I work with have worked flippin' hard to get a ton of great prizes to give away on the night, all doanted by local businesses, badgered a ton of shops and other venues to display our posters, handed out about 1,00 leaflets and had a fair bit of press coverage so far.

Guess what?

Sold about 20 tickets and that's just to family, well cheesed off!

My g/f is complaining that we're wasting our time and we're going to look stupid, which I'm kinda starting to agree with.

What the hell is the matter with people that they won't pay out four sodding quid for a ticket? And they get their first drink free, I mean what do people want?

When you have the likes of local hotels charging £25.00 plus per head for the same thing, but with a meal included, and most are just their to boogie, lol.

Feeling very disillusioned with society this morning, mostly due to my g/f's negative influence.

Now with that positive attitude in place, I've got to go visit a customer, lol.

Thanks for reading.

Can understand how you feel.

Cheap night out... all in aid of charity and all you get met with is apathy.

people do tend to buy tickets for that type of thing last minute tho.....so don't give up.

Sorry to hear the news Darren, however have done things like that before I now know that most of the time it doesn't work, I was hoping that yours was going to be different, however see if you can keep the donation of prizes until the big one in Febraury, DON'T tell them nobody turned up, just that you had so many donations you felt it proper to keep a few back.

Have you tried getting some coverage with your local free newspaper? Do you have a rotary club there who might be able to give you a hand ? Where else have you advertised?

I would have thought there would be plenty of people up for a ticket at £4 a pop with a free drink, maybe they just don't know about it?
KrazyKaz
good idea,

I helped organise a charity fundraiser for the Dyspraxia Foundation and we got all the local businesses involved putting up posters, donating prizes etc. We also got the local free paper and local weekly news involved, and the local radio stations.
We raised £2000 on the night.
We did a charity auction, disco in the evening, included a raffle (venue let us have the hall for nothing)

Good Luck

Hi

Thanks for the responses folks.

Coverage isn't the problem we're having, it's like the first reply said, public apethy.

They're doing the town Xmas lights switch on this Friday and my g/f is going down to the event to hand out leaflets.

The paper is featuring a press release I've written for them next Thursday. The local radio stations are going to be announcing it during the week of the actual event.

I'm banking on the last minute buyers to be honest, there's not a lot else we can do.

Darren J is going to be phoning the local small business this week and ask them if they've sorted their Xmas parties out for their employers and offer them discounts for buying in groups of ten or more.

It would be a real shame for this to flop as the local businesses have been a damn site more helpfull and generous than I would've expected.

I was thinking of asking our local Tesco in town if they'll let us set up a sound system in their covered walkway to promote the world record thing and play a ton of Xmas songs etc etc.

Feeling better than I did earlier afting visiting my customer, just a bit fed up of the negative vibes of erm, close relation who should supportive rather than knocking me back for something I can't ehlp, lol.

Sorry was gonna get off on a rant again.

Cheers
Darren

Sorry to hear of the apparent lack of interest, especially after all the work you've obviously put in to promoting this event. Hopefully, people will arrive to pay on the door, or buy tickets 'last minute', as suggested earlier.

Makes me wonder, are there any better ways you could promote it? What are you focussing on, and is this aspect of particular interest to the paying public?

If possible, give us some examples of your advertising material/wording, and we'll have a look. smile.gif

Timing!

December is a popular party season, charity gigs usually don't run during this period, so maybe that is the problem.

Its a shame and I hope that February is better for you.

Maybe try getting friends to sell tickets with a freeby for the seller??

This sentence caught my imagination, which is sometimes a good thing, and sometimes...err well, sometimes not so good.

Firstly, its good that you're still talking of the POSSIBILITY of it flopping, rather than saying "It has flopped" - theres still a good number of days to go.

As said above, people often have at least one, or two (their partners) Christmas Disco's to attend in December anyway, so a third might be thought of as too much by some, but not, of course, by others. pepsi.gif beer.gif

Heres an idea, although you may have thought about this already...

For your world record attempt in February, you have already contacted many people who have offered (or had their arms twisted) to supply you with some product, service, or "other" item, perhaps their valuable time - free of charge... Now, I suspect that some of that group of people/companies etc, will be those who have supplied prizes for your charity Christmas do, some wont be.

If you took up the ideas (from months ago) about getting pre-organised groups and clubs along as dancers at the event - consider making them aware of the December event too.

Why not contact those people and companies by (e)mailshot, and invite them along (at full price - but make it sound like its a VIP thing - on the night their VIP status need only mean that they get the tables nearest the dancefloor (or bar!)) use the charity night as an advance "thank you for your support".

Bums on seats - if you need to offer a "sweetener" in a month thats so busy the only sweetener usually offered is on the coffee tray as an alternative to sugar, consider offering them a buy 3 get one free offer on the tickets to encourage 4-somes. boff.gif boff.gif
