OK guys and gals,

A lot of talk about Unions & Associations. And if I join what do I get.

Great question, but really it's the wrong question, so lets turn it on it's head and ask the question.........

What Do You Want...............???????

What would persuade you to join a Union or Association???

And before you answer THINK, most of you probably belong to the AA (association) or the RAC (Club) and you pay around £120 a year for basic breakdown / recovery. All you want to know is, that if you breakdown they will come to you, at some point. Other than truck loads of mail trying to releave you of more money, what else do you get????

Interesting topic...

I personally would like peace of mind that should something happen (punter not pay, venue get funny, an auntie doris at the event is so drunk she falls into your console as you are stopping her husband from doing the same) there is a voice you can stand behind as a voice of many rather than just one.

Information is also a requisite. Why are we all logging onto this forum? Information, wether it be on Paula's Boots or on the best subs to match with a PA system there is a wealth of information on here and I personally would like more....

What more, I dont know - Not very helpful rolleyes.gif I know ut it's just what I think.. Stuff like the TVDJA newsletter if very good...

Plus I would like a good "meet". I have met quite a few of the people from my neck of the woods who are on this forum and it's good... Finally talking to people who are not bored once you get past the first CD deck!!

Just a few ideas, but what I personally would like!! thumbup.gif dj.gif

Mikee,

I have only given this a little thought but here goes

1. PIL Insurance included
2. Free Legal Advice Line (with writing of contracts, chasing of bad debts etc)
3. how about tax advice
5. a minimum requirement to join, i.e. you must show at least 2 years experaince before joining

there are probably more

Hi Ian,

No1 - We used to until 9/11, then ins went through the roof.

No2 - I have mentioned this before, great idea, very expensive to set up

No3 - Yep, We had a man from the IR down to talk about what we can and what we can't.
It sounds like you might need an accountant (lol)

No4 - Are you can't count???? (lol)

No5 - We haven't imposed any thing like that. We want the "youngsters" to join, so that they can gain advice, and hopefully aviod the silly "cock ups" that happen

Hi folks

Ok, haven't really sat down and thought about it, but here are some wants off the top of my head.

1. equipment repairs, replacements while gear is being repaired...whether this is done on a favour for a favour basis or just lower price, dunno.

2. roadies on-hand. I'm a blind DJ and roadies are my main concern, along with transport. Folks who have little interest in DJing make poor roadies, whether you pay them well or not.

3. Similar to above. Stand-in DJ's, incase of unreliable roadies, sickness etc.

4. Brain hasn't stretch that far yet, I'll work on it.

Good topic though!

YourBigEvent
An organisation with no egos, helping people who may have trouble/questions on bookings/venues. Even easy questions like what does PAT stand for and help on contracts etc

Mikee, may I suggest yet another wrong Question........"What do you want"?

A good solid association should be based on the premise................ "What can I GIVE" ..................

If we all give ...........................we will all recieve.............it's easy.

We all have experience and knowledge covering a wealth of subjects.

what we lack is the confidence to share our skills with other DJs.

An association will allow people to network, utilise each other's resources and extend thier services to fellow DJs.

If you are not prepared to put something into the organisation, then i am afraid that, I for one would not want you in the organisation.

Alright, let's get this back on track.

We all have our own opinions on the noble art of dj-ing, little dig's at one another will not get us anywhere and belittle the topic.

What Mike is trying to formulate here, in a sensible manner, is what we, the dj's and kj's both full and part time, would want from an official organisation that represents us.

I, personally would like the following:

a. A source of information and advice that we can turn to in our quest to be better dj's. Including somewhere that we can go in troubled times regarding non-payment of fees, dealing with agents, PLI/PAT, inland revenue etc.

b. a message forum where we could air our views and opinions on all aspects of being a dj/kj.

c. A form of liaison with the manufacturers of our equipment. Discussions and information on new products

d,. A body that is respected by those that rely upon us for what we provide.

There may be more, but this is a starter for us all to ponder over.

Cris
