Shall we give the Under 16 members their own "off topic" discussion area on the forum?

Hi,

it depend's on where you are in the country.
Chrispy
He's in the U.S, Shaun and not a good idea to ask Junior Members to post their exact locations nono.gif

Matt, Welcome to the forum, this topic has been covered on various others post's. You may also like to view This Link

I'm sure that also given time a few of our members will reply to your post

Welcome matt (I've got one of those by my front door laugh.gif )

As Chris has 'pointoned' out there are variuos threads about the vast amount of money some of our friends make compared with us lads from the bottom end of this country.

Anyway hope you enjoy you many visits here

With all due respect to the youngsters that have posted this week, there have appeared some pointless posts that probably irritated a few old pro`s 014.gif I think this is a great site and i make the effort to be here several times a day and enjoy it very much but i think that if it becomes flooded with pointless posts then it will certainly change form! I think also that it might be a good idea to make a guide for starting out in the various branches of the dj world that have to be read by novices laugh.gif Dont mean to sound like an old geezer, but i am.Hope i didnt offend anyone rolleyes.gif

Which is why I suggested a seperate forum for the younger age group smile.gif . Then if you don't want to read the off topic post's you don't need to click on that particular link, and it will stop the other DJ related threads becoming a Youth Club.

As with D.J'ing at most functions you will find that it is impossible to please all age groups all of the time. If the post's are on topic then the under 16's can, of course, post in the relevant sections along with everybody else, however when a subject starts on topic and then resorts to a conversation about fireworks or skateboarding, then that is where the Junior section will apply. Currently I can delete these posts but then the rest of the topic won't make sense wacko.gif .

The empathsis is on the "United" in our forum title, and this is why I give all members the option of having their say in any potential changes to the forum, or the addition of new features. I won't try to pretend that running this forum isn't a pain in the censored.gif sometimes I have no choice but to Read every post and so everybody can help me by trying to keep the "off topic" post's in the "off topic" section.

Currently there are around 2500 Off Topic Post's 85% of these are currently within threads which started life as a D.J related question and quickly turned into harmless inuendo or go totally off topic- everybody has been guilty of this at some point whatever your age, myself included so it would be unfair to point the blame at one age group! nono.gif Don't forget the chatroom was also set up entirely for off topic discussion in order to free up this problem from the forum itself!, although it's currently being underused so maybe we should look at a 24 hour chatroom access?.

There is only so much that you can discuss about D.J'ing, which is why i'm happy for this forum to continue as a social meeting place for D.J's as well as an advisory and discussion forum. This forum was started in order to assist those Starting up in business and share idea's for all those already in business, and so my efforts will still be aimed at building these area's of the forum - by default, a lot of these new D.Js will be age groups under 21 - most of us were in our teens when we started ourselves. Perhaps by giving the advice at this early age, then we may avoid the "cowboys" of the future, we were given the chance so why not pass this knowledge on?. Wishful thinking perhaps?.

I'm not going to ban anybody from this forum for posting off topic, however one of the younger members managed to clock up 40 posts in 6 hours - 90% of his post's were entirely off topic, so there is going to be a little bit of Admin Pruning going on the next 24 hours. This person has already received a warning from me, so I consider this one issue closed.

If you want more sections to the forum then ASK, I'm happy for everybody to have a say in what goes on. constructive criticism is always welcomed especially when it is provided along with a possible solution - hence this poll and the idea of giving the under 16's a totally seperate moderated section to use for their own social discussions.

I'm also happy to give the oldies a "Dating" or "d'arby & Joan" section too if that is required. Although judging by the (empty) chatroom tonight - nobody has got anything off topic to discuss! rolleyes.gif

Several people have mentioned writing a comprehensive "all sections covered" guide to the Newbie D.J - yet so far nothing has been produced!. Technology and the internet is great - we have all of this power and amazing knowledge at our fingertips - yet we still expect other people to produce the results smile.gif . We will always have new members arriving, this forum would grind to a halt without them!, so we will get the same old questions asked until the relevant topics are written and "pinned".

Having read your post Chris I was going to change my mind and say maybe give them their own space, but then I'm not sure even that would help because anyone who is the slightest bit interested in the forum clicks on 'read new posts' every time they get here (i do even if i was here 10 minutes previously) The other thought is of course if we do start to segregate then we don't necessarily interact with each other and whilst the 'regulars' would still go read, the youngsters then may get valid questions missed or unanswered due to not being read by everybody. I don't think anybody has the complete answer but whilst i like the banter which occurs, of late it has got a little out of hand.

Nice chatting to u last nite chris, the answers you put up to the u 16 problem are completely spot on and i do agree we are all guilty of straying from the thread but we do tend to get back on it after a while. biggrin.gif Maybe crooksie and sbd have the solution

I voted "no". which seems to be against the flow, so I guess I'd better explain my reasoning.

Firstly...I think that alot, if not all of what we discuss in the DJ area's of the forum can apply to any age of DJ.

We have an off-topic area already, which similarly, should be suitable for all age groups, as long as forum rules are kept in mind when posting. As long as we dont mention anything more than the occasional reference to "How to peel Gaffa tape off of waterbeds" tongue.gif , then the one "off topic" area should also be good for all.

However, my primary concern for our younger members is that if we introduce an area exclusively for Under 16's, then we are "potentially" making it very easy for anyone who wants to prey on under 16 year olds, to see quickly, which members are those ages. And everyso often we are all reminded, by someone elses tragedy, that some sick people roam the internet.

Im sure we've got no-one like that on here right now, and hope we never do. Also, I know that someone taking a bit more time, could click on the extra info/profiles for each of our 400 users and, in most cases, calculate which ones are what ages too.

Not at all, I'm not a parent..and i'm paranoid about internet safety also.

A lot of what you said made perfect sense, and I am in full agreement with you when it comes to safety of the younger members.

There are safety features in place which would make it apparent to me if anybody was contacting them via the forum. Further to your post i'm also going to hide their email addresses from general view. You are right you can never be too careful.

The point about an area for under 16's is a double edged sword. Firstly there is the point that given a section exclusively for them would allow me and the mods to "police" it better smile.gif . Equally it could be argued that this would give indication to anybody with sinister motives as to which members were under 16 sad.gif .

I will go on to say that this forum is safer than most other "general" forums, although the general internet safety rules also apply on here as they would anywhere else. If you are under 16 then for your safety never disclose personal information to anybody, this includes:- Your Surname, Address or Town, Name of your School, Phone number (or even mobile number) and be suspicious of anybody asking you for this information - most genuine adults wouldn't. General country information is ok such as U.S or UK but thats as far as it goes!.

Other than that, it is perfectly safe to continue posting here and the only way that anybody can find out any personal information about you is if you post it publically!, so please take care over what you post.

good points.....maybe we shouldn't have a U16 board.... unsure.gif
