Full Version: Last song of the night

Most DJs like to end the night on a high, leaving the guests going home singing the last track that was played; what tracks do you often play for the finalé?

Tracks that I've found work well as the last song (in no particular order) are:

Monkees - Daydream believer
Queen - Don't stop me now
Robbie - Angels
Elvis P - Wonder of you
Don McLean - American pie
Dean Martin - That's amore
Elvis P - American trilogy
Natalie Cole - This will be (at soul gigs)
Nine Simone - My baby just cares for me
The Foundations - Build me up buttercup

I dislike playing it as the last song because I think it's too much of a cliché, but obviously Frank S - New York new York works well, although it will also wind some of the guests up, because a common perception is that ALL DJs play this as the last song whistling.gif

Can we not dwell on the last paragraph too much, as there is a separate thread here on that topic rolleyes.gif
C.S
The Corrs-Toss the feathers
Pogues- Fiesta
Greenland whalefishers - Irish washerwoman
Rage against the machine- Killing in the name
Prodigy - Mindfields
Leftfield - Open up

Have all worked for me at one time or another.

Tom Jones - Help Yourself

But I have finished on loads of different tunes depending on the gig:
Ellis Hall - Flip flop fly (Chicken run dance)
Nina Simone - My baby just cares for me
Carl Orf - Carmina Burana (The omen - brilliant for the boarding school disco fear.gif laugh.gif )
Queen - don't stop me now
Andy Williams - Can't take my eyes off you
Mo The Motown Man

all go down very well - everytime I've played them as a very last song

Also good ones:

Beautiful South - Perfect 10
Sixpence None the richer - Kiss Me
You'll never walk alone

Kingy
I've used loads over the years.

Used to use the Ovalteenies for ages, then Men behaving Badly, Blue berry Hill, The outro from the Fast show( Please release me, let me go....)

depends on the feel at the end of the night.
smulou
Katrina & The Waves Walking on Sunshine works really well always well received has them singing it on the way out.
Like to finish night on a high so lleaving with a buzz rather than the more traditional slow dance finishes
jeffwall
For the "clubby" parties ive played Ultrabeat..im feeling fine, great tune and gives you the oppurtunity to say your thanks, best wishes, etc etc etc whilst the "slow start" of the track is playing, weddings and oldish partys, depends on the gig/people etc, new york always works well no matter what!
ian
Well, I seem to be totally out of step here. I take it right down at the end. My typical last tracks would be something like Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye), Turn Your Lights Down Low (Bob Marley & Lauryn Hill), Make You My Baby (Joe).
DJF
depends really on the night.
sometimes give them the option fast or slow one
done a mates wedding on sat gone did finish with bryan adams - everything i do (extended version) everyone clapped cheered and still wanted more
so finished with scissor sissters - laura to a rapturous applause?????
Steve_Mitchell
Well I like to finish with a slowy. You can take your pick there, there is that many. And then after that I always play a sing-along as the final tune..

Smokey--Livin next door to alice
Commitments--Mustang Sally
Ovaltinies--Wish me luck as you wave me good bye.

I was asked to play Auld Langs Eyne for a party at the weekend, where the 22 year old dance teacher was leaving all her 5-18 year old girls to move abroad. My first thought was that it wasn't the right time of year, my second thought was that 95% of people in the room won't have a clue how to hold their hands let alone sing along to the words.

After listening to the traditional verison of the track, I decided to opt for Slade's version. For those that aren't aware, it starts with Noddy singing Auld Langs Eyne traditionally - I think he sings along with the bagpipes actually - then the band join in singing with the bass drum keeping a beat.

The singing then changes to "You'll Never Walk Alone" - hands in the air everybody!

Then comes the fake ending - this is where I give three cheers for the bride and groom/birthday person/etc. As the final cheers go out the music comes back on loud and fast with a bouncy sing out loud version of Auld Langs Eyne - you've got about 40 seconds of this, the crowd are usually going mental.

With about 30 seconds of the track left the singing ends but the cheering continues - great for end of night, but you have to fade it out because Noddy then does his "We wish you a merry christmas" bit.

I have used this for the last few years and it has never let me down.
jeffwall
i used the slade last n.y.e agree great track!

Just before I went on 'holiday', for a while, I used to regularly end with Shania Twain's 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman!'

Superb vocal intro that you can replace with your own voice (for added cheesyness), a superb guitar at the start to really wind up the volume on, and when the percussion comes in........

Always used to fill the floor with that one at the end - the biggest problem was trying not to play it during the rest of the evening! biggrin.gif

I'll be using it again, I just know it!
paula
Think we should all stand united and play the same last song as each other this week biggrin.gif ....could do we go together...or...or.....need a think! rolleyes.gif

I like to play couple of slow ones thne finish with the slow then uptempo version of que sera sera followed by Ricky Tomlinson "Are you looking at me" I then have Peter Kay saying "put big light on". Tell bar staff what I will play at the end and if they are on their toes, it is a great night when the lights come on. Expecially if they are up for singing DAnny Boy.............

First time ever for me I think.

Last night didn't play any slowies at all and finished with Walking on Sunshine, and got a round of applause.

Mind you, it was a hotel dinner dance/Abba tribute night with 3 hen parties, a couple of works parties and various other groups.
Baldeagle
In the 70's we always ended with Glad All Over by The Dave Clarke 5. I was curious to see how it would go down now - same result - the place explodes! (but you need a crowd of 40/50/60 year olds!
john321
AS said earlier - You'll Never Walk Alone
Gary
Always variable... I've usually got a good few requests left by the end of the night, so I announce the 4 possibilities and leave it to them to vote:

Last night for example (3 EX-Dj's in the audience giving me stick coz I wasnt playing music for their 3 ages all night - when their age represented only 10% of the room - I'm not surprised they're EX-DJ's)

The last song vote options were:

Robbie Williams: Angels

Pogues & Kirsty McCall: Fairytale of New York

Men @ Work: Land Down under (strange, I know but some persistant bimbo would have taken my head off if I didn't at least include it in a vote)

Mariah Carey: All I want for Christmas is yooooooo (2nd play - it went down a storm earlier)

The Pogues won...(as it wasnt a beauty contest) and the requestors of the losing songs at least felt that their song was in the short list, and would've got played had voting swung another way.

Where can I get that from Rich ?

I still use NY, NY never get sick of it just a great end to the night.

Sometimes use

'Come on over to my place'
'Everybody needs somebody'
'Sweet caroline'
'All you need is love' - at weddings

stoke53

Jimbo
DJ Foureyes
I think it all depends on the mood of the crowd and the type of music you have been playing all night. I generally try not to get them too excited for the last song because that's when they nag you to 'just play one more!' But it has to be memorable.
I try to play the singalong or cheesey songs like-
Blueberry Hill
Big Spender
Sweet Caroline
Just too good to be true
Goodnight Sweetheart
Delilah
Steve_Mitchell
no song can be played after ,

Native New yorker--Odesey

Pure class..
nrgize
Any Williams and Denise van Outen - can't take my eyes of you

It works a treat !

Or if not S CLub - Reach.

Alot of events now want faster songs to end the night, where as before slow songs would always end the night.

Is there an echo in here or is there just a surplus of parrot food up in the mersey whistling.gif
