hey, i've been looking at a few dj kits, and found one that seemed reasonably priced and looked good.

here's the description
"Includes 2 TT1550 multidirectional efficient belt-drive turntables; a DM950 2-channel plus mic mixer with EQ on each channel; slide-style cueing; and HF125 flexible 7-position dual headphones."

I would be using this for some scratching.........really only as a hobby.

How does this sound to all of you?

Alex, if you going to be using them for scratching, then you need to be looking for at least a pair of direct drive turntables - even with slipmats, belt drive are little more than nice looking hi-fi turntables and won't take the punishment that scratching gives them sad.gif

Take a look at either the Numark Direct Drives, or Gemini XL-300 or XL-500 Mk2's. I'm not a big fan of Numark myself, but that is just my opinion. If you ever do turn professional, then its' Technics or Vestax, but for home use you will find the Gemini's perfectly adequate, but steer clear of beltdrives!.

thanks a lot chris.......i'll check to see if i can find a direct drive system.......

you saved me from wasting $200+

Hey!, it's what I do, so no problems smile.gif . Nice to get thanks every once in a while. If you need any more info just ask. No need to spend a fortune, but direct drive is the way to go thumbup.gif , even if you need to spend a little more, or save up a bit longer, it'll be worth it in the long run!.

lol
if ur looking at cheap but good quality, get the Numark Phat Pak (comes with 2 TT-1650, numark's cheapest DD TTs that are acceptable, and comes with a DM-950 mixer as well. also with the headphones), or the Gemeni Pro-4 (something to that name, comes with XL-300s, mixer, headphones, and speakers), or the Stanton Platium Pak 2 (Str8-80x, mixer, headphones). Best bet is to buy techincs or vestex though, or the Numark TT-X1/TT-200s.

Stantons, to my opinion, are good for home use, but do not have a very good build to them, so they do pick up some unnessery noise.

or the Gemeni Pro-4

The Gemini Kit is known as the scratchmaster 4.0 and is a VERY good buy if you can find it from a dealer in your area. Failing that post a message to Rob in the Gemini section of the forum, and he'll supply you with a dealer in your area for the scratchmaster kit smile.gif

another question:

What are cartridges, why do i need one, and what kind should i be looking at?

huh.gif
Chrispy
Catridges are the device that sits on the end of the tonearm and holds in the stylus (The stylus or styli is the bit that is in contact with the groove of the vinyl!).

The cartridge converts the tiny electrical impulses from the record, into vibrations and then very low level sound, which is then amplified (made louder) by the mixer. smile.gif

Hi,

if your going to scratch (not your censored.gif -LOL) then you need direct drive tt's with slippery slip mats, (ie hip hop mats are best). slide style cueing is very good although for scratching it has'nt got much use (its like a mini cross fader for your headphones so you can hear the mix from start to finish)

For a hobbie, and as your starting out, I would say go for direct's but not the most expensive. As if you decide to give it up there's no point to spending £800+ on tt's. If you decide you like it then go for technics with more than 2 channels on your mixer. (i have 5 channels on mine, with replacable x-fader and split cue)

any more questions post below

haha........

i think im gonna go for the gemini kit...i'll remember to look for some slippery mats tho.

However if your scratching is that bad, a good quality flea powder would be cheaper

Spin!

You should consider a career in comedy if you ever get tired of dj'ing (yeah right). Yes I can see it now "Spin, the next Jerry Seinfeld".
