turntables vs variable speed cd players... well it is worthwhile considering that cds are lighter to carry than vinyl... have a play with both and then decide where your hard earn cash should go.... 042.gif
The Spindoctor
Not to forget that you should also have one eye on the future, when I started out they said nothing would replace vinyl, then nothing would replace Cd's, what comes after Mp3???
kazzachi
......MP4? ha ha!!!
Dj rrrico

Hi, rrrico, 042.gif

It depends on what you want to use them for (ie, what sort of music etc..), post bk

Dj rrrico
dj.gif most likely house,dance, and mab some r&b (i.e missy elliot, 50 cent....etc) but still 042.gif

If you CAN get the your sort of music that you like, fast enough (EG: on single, or download etc) on CD, then definately keep the idea of CD-decks in mind.

CD-decks are alot quicker to use than vinyl, especially when it comes to back-cueing after "testing" the beats are in sync etc. CD-decks also offer a vast amount of extra features that can only add variety and creativity to whatever you do.

If you're planning on working in clubs, which invariably just have plain old gramophones ( biggrin.gif ) in them, however, you will unfortunately need old vinyl decks to practice on, as clubs will either have no cd-decks, or different cd-decks to whichever ones you choose.
Dj rrrico
true but the cd thing i saw was a dual cd but i dont know how to use it im just starting dont even got any equipment yet but if more ppl say go w/ the cd ill probably go w/that one, im just afraid of wasting $(as probably most ppl r) i.e if i buy the dual cd thing and have no idea how to use the thing and no one does either im screwed but if i buy the turntables i have the same prob u know wut i mean, so wut do u think i should do?????

Yes, I started mixing on cd's and moved onto vinyl, but i'd rather use cd than vinyl, mainly because thats what I started out with, but also cd's are easier to transport than vinyl. For R&B I'd suggest direct drive tt's as they can start quicker than belt and scratching is a big part of being a hip hop DJ.

Gary's point of cd's is very true, cueing is much, much faster, as you only have to hit the cue button and it's there, but vinyl, you have to wind it back and takes time. Also the higher up model's of cd dex have effects like echo and reverb etc.. This is good, but if you only have a small amout of cash your better off starting low then working up, but if you have the cash then go for the higher models (ie pioneer 1000).

Another point is the cost in the long run, over here vinyls cost around £8-15 for 1 vinyl (with a few remix's on), for £15 you can get 2 cd's but with 40 tracks.

Dj rrrico
like i said b4 im new and all the stuff ur guys r saying(and girls) r going ove my head example....

I have a dual cd player, not top of the range but it's good for what I want it for, I mix Old skool Dance, D+B and UK Garage. Don't worry about knowing how to use them, I found out how to use mine in a matter of days, being as you havent bought any yet, I suggest you have a good play with em in the shop, if your unsure on how to use it, ask.

When I started, I looked at my cd dex and saw loads of flashing lights etc..buttons like cue, pitch and loop, and thought god, what have I done. but after a few pushing of buttons I got the hang of it.

Remember to ask questions

CD Dex is short for cd decks-sorry it's me being lazy-LOL

Cueing is where you start at a certain point of a song, ie first beat, and when mixing you go back to that cue point to begin a mix.

There is a topic on here about mixing, I'll find it for you.

CD all the way with me, I can't buy vinyl unless I travel 50 miles there and bac, also CD is lighter, may sound strange but everybody here would rather carry 1000 CD's than 1000 records, they get heavier the older you get. Also if you need someone to bring a track along it will normally be on CD
Dj_Kray
I find this question very intresting as i own both technics 1210s, the club standard deck which if your serious about mixing would be the minimum standand of deck you would need, and i also own the best cd deck money can buy the denon dns-5000 which is a amazing bit of kit.

I still prefer straight beat mixing ( getting 2 records playing at the same speed then fading from 1 song to the other) on vinal for me its just that little bit better but the cost of vinal mixing soon adds up so i would recomend starting with cd decks coz the difference between the 2 nowadays are very very small, but let us know the make of the cd player before you buy it and we can all let you know if its any good!

Ok if you serious about djing i would buy this book it is great i have a copy! thumbup.gif

HOW TO DJ (PROPERLY) BY F BROUGHTON & B BREWSTER
It's the dj's bible, it covers absolutely everything you'll ever need to know. How to dj (properly) covers it all, from why you should be djing, how to listen to music, beat matching, mixing in key, cutting, your first gig and turntable effects.
Dj rrrico
thats good and all but i 1st need to buy equipment
