Anyone know how to disable the random windows messages (Messenger Services) that appear when you're using Internet explorer?
I know it can be done as I disabled it previously on another configuration of windows, but can't remember how I did it, and they're annoying the hell out of me at the moment.
Additionally, anyone found a decent program to kill pop-up ads?

Download the browser called Opera, it has one of the best pop / ad killers I have ever used. Neither is it full of the Microsoft crap that I.E has built in

, so runs a hell of a lot faster.
Pegasus is also a better email client than Outlook Express.
Another good idea is to download the free Firewall called "Zonealarm", this not only stops your PC from being hacked / attacked but when you first run the program it will ask you if you wish to allow a program called "msmgr.exe" to access the internet, if you select "no" and also"Remember this in the future" then it will stop Uncle Bill Gates from messing about with your copy of windows, believe it or not windows "phones home" at random times during your internet usage without you knowing - why? - for reasons unknown! - Frightening ,Huh?

Hope that fixes it

Hi Eskie;
Windows Messenger, and messenger service are actually 2 different beasties. Unfortunately, disabling this entry from msconfig WILL NOT stop these annoying random pop up ads that you, (and the rest of us - - well, not me anymore) keep getting.
The actual way to disable this NETBIOS messaging system is dependant on what operating system you are using.
I use XP pro and to disable this annoyance I simply did the following;
Select Start>Control Panel>Administrive Tools>Services, then scroll down to where it says "Messenger" and left click once to hi-light it. Once hi-lighted, a new menu will appear on the left side of the screen, giving you a couple of options. Selecting "Stop the Service" WILL stop those annoying pop-ups with no loss of other services or programs.

Hi Hayd;
Call me an old cynic if you will, but I have a theory on "free" software.
I answer lots of queries on my own forum, from people that are experiencing problems with their computers. A little bit of digging generally turns up the fact that a free piece of software has recently been installed and along with it, a raft of so called "spyware", (malware, big brotherware etc etc).
Fact is, the people that create this "free" software have to pay the bills somehow, and more often than not it's by selling out to a marketing company by inviting them to load their marketing software alongside that handy "atomic clock" program you thought you couldn't live without.
Next thing you know, "pop up central"!!
Unless you really cant live without it, I recommend you leave it where it is.
Just my opinion of course. You may have another?

If you've ever downloaded Free Software then its worth running the trial version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, which searches and destroy's "Spyware" which may have infiltrated your PC and now be Phoning home on all of your surfing habits!.
Some of the more popular spyware loaded programs include....
Kazaa (not Kazaalite)
Grokster
Bonzi Buddy (The Purple Pain!)
Download accelerator Plus
AOL Messenger (AIM)
Gator

12-ghost free version is a cut down version of the pay one, I`ve not had a single pop u since installing 3 months ago and I also have an ad / spyware remover which found it to be clean.
Be careful using Kazaalite , it still has spywear unless you install the hosts file into you windows directory properly. A friend of mine has been caught downloading dodgy pictures from kazaalite and could now face a prison sentance ( bloody idiot ). But the police had screenshots of his kazzaalite in action , so be warned !!
