Full Version: D.J Music Compilations?
Dj's United > STARTING OUT > Getting Started

Reading through the post's, it seems that there are an increasing number of D.J's who are new to the business, and looking to either build up their music collection or start it from scratch.

I'm seriously thinking of offering various recognised D.J compilations as a "box set" which would virtually cover all era's from Rock'N'Roll and the 60's right up to classic old skool of the 90's. Basically give you a flying start to covering the average function with various age groups.

Whilst obviously not cheap, it would offer you a significant saving over buying the sets individually from your high street retailer or direct from DMC etc smile.gif .

If you are starting out, or need to update your collection, then this could be an opportunity for you. Spending money on your Music is an important consideraton, and should come before purchasing that extra lighting effect or Moving Message Display rolleyes.gif

Everything offered will be original, I don't deal in pirated material and never will, so don't ask!. The added advantage is that the compilations will be selected by working D.J's, which takes some of the guess work over what will or won't work when your browsing your local HMV, especially if you are new to the business.

Covered in the set:- Rock 'n' roll, 60's classics, 70's Classics, 70's Soul & Motown, 80's Classics, Hits of the 90's, Party Classics, Rock Anthems, Alternative / Indie & a Love Song Compilation (smoochies / background etc). Most of the above are either Dual, Triple or Four CD sets offering great value for money.

Just a shame that Mastermix and co aren't a bit more co-operative, so that we could release our own!. DJ's United vol1, vol2 etc and the "Best of Paula"!

Thoughts and opinions please!......

Being the boring one and bringing the topic back on track (I always miss the good bits of those chats!) I think it's a good idea for the compilations Chris.

What did you have in mind, when can we get em and how much are they? biggrin.gif
Gary
Ah yes, the topic... I wondered when that would be seen again.

I'm all for compilations on CD...especially if they are individual tracks, not megamixes of 40/50 odd tracks all topped'n'tailed to fit in an 80 minute set.

Full track listings would be needed of course, rather than 5 getting mentioned and then "...and many more"

And of course, if they are compilations which can be bought elsewhere, then our "membership status" should make the items available in the "over 100 posts" section, at a preferential rate....(he said hopefully).

Chrispy
Well this was an idea I touched on briefly before (may have even been the pre-Gary days smile.gif )

basically, i'm a DMC distributor, however due to the exceedingly low profit margin that DMC allows it's distributors and the relatively low (in the grand scale of D.J equipment) prices of DM Compilations, then I would find it difficult to sell this sort of thing at a discount, at least for one disc.

However, given a purchase of several box sets, for several members then my buying power increases and I can look at prices as a package, rather than selling one £12 CD for £11.70 and convincing you that it's a bargain and worth buying from me.

Even if you took 8 CD's and I knocked £2 of each, it would be a saving of £16 for the package, which makes it worth considering.

I touched on this idea briefly - both with DMC and Pioneer White Disc. For instance, if you are subscribing to one of these monthly "new release" CD's, then it would make sense to pool our resources and all buy through one source i.e Me, This way I could offer you the same CD, for £18/ month rather than whatever you are paying. Over a 12 month subscription this would add up smile.gif .

However this idea, was met with the same enthusiasm as Bernard Matthews at a Vegertarian convention, so i've moved on....

Now, with the numbers of "newbies" seemingly on the increase, what would be better than to offer an almost complete "collection" suitable for the average Wedding / 21st etc. Given the fact that buying several "NOW" CD's would take you over the £100 mark, without giving you any of the Retro requirements - such as 60's, 70's, 80's, Motown etc.

Again buying "best of motown" and "cheesy party hits" will give you a better selection, but how many will you ACTUALLY play off each CD.

If I was to offer DMC Box sets (NOT MIXED) which cover all era's as a package to start up D.J's, or even "top up" packages to existing ones, then we would be looking at a saving over you buying them all individually from DMC - Thanks to my trade discount. Again, I can't offer you blistering savings off individual sets, but purchase several together and I could.

I'm not mentoning or going to include Mastermix...I emailed them with the idea, but their silence remains deafening. So since DMC have given me the green light and shown interest, then I'm gonna be loyal to them.
kazzachi
Go on the Pointer!!!! Seeing as I have just cancelled my subscription with a certain company I am more than happy to see what you can offer me chris! Basically I was subscribing to a certain company who used to be very good with their releases but over the last year have gone rapidly downhill in what they have been putting out - basically I cant use what they send me. What should have been pre-release was getting to me weeks after it had charted and was totally the wrong mix for me to be able to play to my sort of crowd. If you can get something going with another distributor you have my subscription!! rolleyes.gif

I am in like Kazz`S umbrella Mr Pointon,at present nothing available to me here and music finding\buying is difficult.Am very interested in what you have to offer and i have a uk address so it doesnt have to be sent abroad. biggrin.gif
Tonsk
I too, would be interested in that.

I've looked through the DMC Box sets etc and there are a couple that have some great tracks on it..

And not forgetting the subscribed monthly disks as would be interested in them also.....

Just wondering though, can you (or does anyone know where I can) get a hold of the Mastermix Mashed Up tracks?
Dynamite Discos
i use those dmc box sets and find them really usefull - so far i have the 60's, 70's and 80's one and hope to add more soon. The idea of a box set of some of these compilations would be great especially for the new dj - i imagine getting the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and Party 1 box set should provide a new dj with the basis of a good collection - and would be ok for them to start with. i would estimate the value to be about £150 maby which isnt bad for a full starter cd collection.

Good ideas chris - hope theres enough interest
Dj_Kray
I dont subscribe to any cds at the mo and would be very intrested to see what you can offer!! biggrin.gif
Hugmaster
Hi folks

I'm surprised at all the negative comment regarding mastermix. I subscribe to the pro disk collection and am always surprised how far ahead they are, eg, fast food rockers (god help us) 6 weeks before it's actually out, I could go on but I won't.

I also find their Classic Cuts stuff extremely good and have tons of them.

I'll have to take a look at DMC and see how they compare.

However, I have to say, I've heard some of the mastermix mixes and in some cases, given the right equipment I could do much better lol.

Good idea though Chris, I had a large CD collection before I start DJing professionally so had a head start, don't know how I'd manage if I were starting from scratch.

Mastermix used to be good. My comments were aimed at their silence when I approached them regarding possible bulk buying (and new business) via the medium of this forum. I also asked them if they would like to represent themselves on this forum, as Gemini do.

Sadly, Mastermix elected not to reply, let alone take up the offer, and like many companies they've grown so big that they've forgotten who they set up to serve, and those whom made them as successful as they are, in the first place - i.e the Mobile D.J

Will have to see about shipping CD Packages to the U.S, It may be worth considering since they don't weigh that much and can be sent by air or surface mail, rather than UPS or DHL etc, which can be expensive for DJ Equipment.

I'll look into it smile.gif
