did a wedding last night in york with a band, the function room was not set up till 8.15, buffet at 9 and a 12 o clock finish. the band wanted 2 x 1 hour slots but did not want to start the 1st slot till after the buffet, buffet was at 9 and a room of 220 people to feed. band did 9.30 till 10.30 and 10.45 till 11.45 leaving me a full 2 x 15 mins slot. i dont mind but i feel the B & G felt i didnt offer value for money, any thoughts on working with bands and timings.

cheers

i go out alot with a couple of mates in a duo doing weddings and so on as a trio so if it's say 8-12.

normally if a wedding we try and do this:
disco 7:45 till 9
buffet 9pm+ background music
band 9-30 till 10:15
disco 10:15 till 11
band 11 till 11:30
disco 11:30 till 12

or if we do 8-1
disco 7:45 till 9
buffet 9pm+background music
band 9-30 till 10:15
disco 10:15 till 11
band 11 till 11:45
disco 11:45 till 1

i would have nicely asked the band could they not reduce the set to 45 mins or 50 mins per set.
if not even though the band is on you are still on duty and the b+g should have known that there would have been a band on and would now how long the set is as they probably would have seen the band themselves before booking so don't worry too much

It's always best if the clients let you know in advance how the evening should be structured and the bride and groom should have told you that before the event.

We did a wedding on Saturday with a singer. Originally we were booked from 8 until 12. Then the bride changed it from 9 until 1, telling us that a singer would be on until 9.

We set up in the morning and the singer was there so we checked his timings. He said he was on from 6.30 until 9.

We started on time and an hour later were surprised that the singer made no move to go. Then the groom told us that the singer would be doing another 45 minute spot at 11.15.

Absolutely no problem but a good example of not being given all the necessary information.

You were not responsible for co-ordination so what else could you have done in the circumstances you describe?

(By the way, in case anyone else works with him, the singer was named Reece and was not only very good but a really nice guy too.)
