Hi Gang,
I've just been asked for a quote for an engagement party on the 1st October in Maidstone. The venue is a dance hall and restraunt type thing apparently. I think it is called something like Manos, or similiar. Has anyone ever worked hear before? Any advise on how much to charge is also much appreciated!
As i said it's for an engagement from 7:00 - 11:30PM. Around 80 Guests. We have to get there by 5:30 to setup. Its around about 30 miles from my house, so a good half hour i expect! So how much would you quote? And has anyone worked it before?

Cheers

In your position I'd first get the exact venue name then phone it to find out the layout, space available etc.

Then charge what I normally charge based on function size etc. ( from £295 )

However I never give a firm price initially, only a rough one, I then send out a brochure which illustrates the various options and a letter with my recommendation.

Is there any reason why you should not quote your usual rates?

Hope you find this useful.

Only 30 miles away, a local gig, no extra hours = normal rate

If you are new at this game, i would ring around the local area and get a few quotes from other discos...

That way you can work out a price that suits the area and clientell.

There is no point in saying to the customer £295 if the local area price is around £150 or worse. You still need to compete with the other discos in the area.

I was playing in Sevenoaks School 2 weeks ago, bearing in mind that i am based in oxfordshire, but they wanted me and a band as they had been to one of my shows elsewhere. But that sort of venue is the ones where the money is. Pubs and small hotels/ restuarants will only pay a "going rate" so there is no point trying to get the top dollar.

Hope this is of some help.

5.30 - 11.30 = 6 hours
Not going to include standing time?

4.5 hours DJ'ing.
For every hour that you enter, are you going to charge a set figure? Say £45?

60 miles round trip.

E.g.
1 hour = £45...total hours worked (5) = £225
Standing time = 1.5 hours = £90
Add £5 for fuel

Example Total £320
Take a £70 deposit and the balance of £250 on night.
(The travel time has not been included for the example)

If we disregard that example, what would your fellow local DJ charge / quote to these people or to 'cover' for you in an emergency?

I reckon £80 is about right... fear.gif

Yep, there is a lot of sense in this. Market Research is a plus for any business, whether you are a window cleaner or a DJ. Test the market and see what the average price is in your area, and pitch yourself around this figure.

Being more expensive than average, makes you likely to be overlooked unless you are offering some additional or unique service to back up the extra fees, being too cheap will make people suspect that you are cheap because you don't have the correct gear, or have no faith in your abilities.

Ring up four or five local DJ's, note the prices and then divide it to find the average, and pitch your fee around that figure.

The venue sounds like Rianno's just on the Tonbridge Road. Ive not played it but the access looks pretty good, with a car park just to the rear of the venue.

Go check the venue out or at least give them a ring.

Price wise I would have thought between £250 & £300.
