In this area, 80's / 90's Indie (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Charlatans, Smiths etc) Never really went away although it was often just the odd two or three requests. But I've just had five weddings in a row where they have asked for more than just the odd track, and we have ended up doing around 30 mins of Indie to a packed dancefloor.
Is it me, or has Indie recently made a big comeback?. We've seen a full dancefloor from everything from the White Stripes and the Killers right back to the Madchester stuff

The wedding I did last night most of the guests went absolutely mental to The Killers-Somebody Told Me

This year I've found just over half of weddings have included a large proportion of Indy on their "would like to hear" sheets. These have been couples in their mid 20's to early 30's.
During my meeting with customers (more an informal chat about their event at which I make notes) as well as directly discussing music, I try to get a general feel by chatting about where they go out, and their favourite radio stations (which I make a point of listening to during the week leading up to their wedding).
Typically they don't go to night clubs, and tend to listen to CD's in the car rather than the Radio, although prefer Radio 1 (or even Radio 2) too ILR.
The album charts are probably a better indication of what they like, rather than the singles chart (which applies more to the under 20's). Certainly Indy is doing well in the album charts, even if the singles chart is dominated by Hip-Hop/R&B & Pop.

The wedding I did on Saturday had a large Indie element in the B & G's advance request list.
The 30th birthday party I did a few weeks ago was Indie all night.
Indie requests do seem to be on the increase.

howdy folks
i do agree chris it's on the increase in lists and requests considerably
done a 30th on saturday in helsby and the birthday boy and girl had asked if i had some indie being the kind of guy i am i said yes what would you like they replied loads.
so played indie for about 2 hours then hit the cheese machine for about an hour then asked to play more indie to finish off.
played the stone roses - i wanna be adorred to finish with and they went mental
did glance at the tables on the way out but found no illegal sbustances so people really are into it.
there are some not so heavy indie tracks like keane - everybodys changing, maroon 5 - this love, oasis - lyla went down brill
so theres an aswer for you all

Yep, Indie and "rock" are definatley "in" at the moment.
Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Idol, Dire Straits have been top of the requests for the last month or so.

I've thought the same this year about this, Every time we play the same hotel in Stockport there seem to be more requests for this Indie Dribble than anu other type of music. Fingers crossed it dont make a big come back as we need more good tunes for punters to bop to.

This is a verry biggoted & narrow minded comment to make, especially as you are far likely to encounter "Class A" drugs at an evening where the playlist is more shall we say... R&B orientated
The reason people are into it is that there is actually a large degree of musicianship involved.
AS for Rock & Indie Being on the increase ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!! If you don't want these sort of jobs, Pass them on to someone who does!

1st of all steve i agree with the amount of musicianship put into indie and rock bands over the last three or four years it is thriving and great to see.quite a few gigs over the last three years where i've not only been the dj but also a guest i have seen an increase in the amount of drugs being taken at private and corporate events and even my own family party's, drugs are on the increase everywhere we look so i don't think iam being narrow minded or biggoted at all, as i am very against drugs i have 1st hand experience with this, as i won't mention why and i don't mean i used to take them because i've never tried.
one gig i done last year was a uni gig not gonna mention where but they wer ALL stoned off their heads and class a,so it will be linked in some way

I occasionally like to see if people wil bite, it got a reaction didn't it?. It did sound like you were saying all people into Indie/Rock were druggies, so (being very into Rock/Indie/Alternative) I jumped to their defence.
*There's usually a lot more "I hate loud guitar music" replies on threads like this, are we all gradually accepting my point of view???*
I'm supprised that nobody has come down on my comment about R&B crowds (or maybe they're getting used to me?), tho you must admit there is more than a small element of truth in it

*Actually I like a very broad selection of music so this is kind of a trick question, but I do favour Loud anti-social guitar music. It's not only the musicianship involved but by & large the lyrics tend to be more intelligent too (that ought to provoke a response!!)

Depends whether the response is related to Indie music, which is what the thread was about!!!

I think the recent success of bands like The Killers, White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, etc. has a lot to do with it.
I do the same thing with my kids who are only 10 and 7. They will play some new band they like and then I'll say, "that sounds like so and so from the 80's / 90's / whatever". Then they realise that there WAS decent music before last year and get into it. I think the same is going on with the bands I've mentioned.
Cheers,
Jack.
