I have a 30th this Saturday. Having requested nothing special, other than Abba and Chart n Cheese initially, I spoke with the client earlier and they have now told me they want lots of funky house...listing Pretty Green Eyes, Put Them High and Take Me Away as ideal tracks for the night.

The clients hubby has also stated a liking of Daddy Yankee.....WHO?????

Now I have the Now albums, I have seen Funky House albums, but I have never done more than a couple of twenty minute sets of funky house before, usually working with whatever is in the charts at the time.

Can you guys give some advice and guidance please? I'm looking for track suggestions as well as set suggestions. I don't mix and I'm not going to be playing specific mixes because it is a family party - chart edits only for me.

Thanks.

Daddy Yankee is a Reggaeton singer. He is in the charts (or was in the charts) with Gasolina. That track was the biggest track across Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean over the last year.

As always, you need to check whether he's just heard this track and likes it or whether he's into Reggaeton in general. If you're going to play a few tracks, you could also try Lo Que Paso Paso, by Daddy Yankee. Another popular Reggaeton artist is Don Omar (he had an album out called the Last Don). Good tracks off that include Dile and Dale Don Dale. You could also try Culo, by Pitbull. It's not Reggaeton, but it's got a similar vibe to it. Also, Oye Mi Canto, by NORE, Daddy Yankee and Nina Sky was a big hit. A new Reggaeton track which looks like it might go big is called Sientelo, by Speedy and Lumidee. There are loads of other Reggaeton artists, but I'm guessing it will only be one or two tracks you're after, rather than a whole set of Reggaeton.

I would call it Reggaeton - a sound that we are going to hear a lot more of over the next few months (it's been big in the US for some time).

'Some good funky house tracks listed above. But don't forget the current big tracks like
Freemasions - Love On My Mind
Axwell - Feel The Vibe
Inaya Day - Nasty Girl
which have all crossed over on to Top 40 radio.

You could also dig out Les Rythmes Digitales - Jacques Your Body. I'm finding that it goes down a storm since they started using it in the Citron ad (with the dancing car/robot).

And some of my favorates from the past year or so that go down well with crowds who like funky house:
Cerrone (feat Jocelyn Brown) - Hooked On You
Jill Scott - Goldern (Wookie Remix)
Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You (Grant Nelson Remix)

Freemasons - Is A Tune!!

Inya Day is good if you get the proper bootleg not the naff one they have released.
Dynamite Discos
just go get MOS funky house sessions or something along those lines - should cover any funky house needs you have.
DJ_Ajay
aaron smith - dancin'

Less than 24 hours to go and they call up with a specific track - 4 Strings, Take Me Away (Into the Night). I've not looked yet, but I'm about to look for albums it is on that I will have to purchase.

In the meantime if any of you can recommend an album this track will be on, be it a DJ only cd or a commercial release please let me know.

Thanks again.

In conclusion.....

The party girl (30th) invited over 100 people. 61 said they would attend, but only 30 turned up - all family. Consequently, the night was quite low key. Seeing as the room was 75% over 50's, I had to play older stuff to keep them happy - I knew that as soon as the modern stuff started the majority of the mature audience would get their coats.

I felt terrible for her, she was lovely too.

Anyway, track of the night was most definitely Gasolina, because the only two women in the room who were under 40 danced to it in a way the BBC would have banned biggrin.gif

Thank you all for your input again.

Having difficulty keeping up with all the new releases. All the Reggaeton people seem to be bringing out new albums every month!! Daddy Yankee has two just out (a live one and a studio one), Don Dinero too. I've got a couple I still haven't had a chance to listen to yet (like MVP2). Then there are all the collaborations - there's a Wisin & Yandell track on R. Kelly's TP3 reloaded I think. Then there are all the Reggaeton/Dancehall collaborations (like Rah Rah with Elephant Man and Daddy Yankee - even old ones, like the Sexy Body one with Sasha and Ivy Queen). Plus the Reggaeton remixes of Hip-Hop tunes.

How does everyone else keep up with new music? I play CD's in my car and stick them on my iPod, but I still have a hard time listening to everything!

I do something similar; I stick new CDs onto an mp3 disk as I have an mp3 player in my car, so i can listen to the tracks as I drive around.

I went to Cuba late last year and picked up a few reggaeton albums; artists like Candyman Y La Familia, Control Cubano, El Medico, Topaz Sound, Loony Toons, Tecno Caribe and many others plus some compilations such as A Lo Cubano 2004.

I've always been deep into all the various offshoots of reggae such as ska, rocksteady, lovers rock, dubwise, revival/studio 1, dancehall, ragga etc; plus also have always liked soca & calypso and in the last few years have been getting more and more into salsa so I embraced the fusion of a few of those styles gleefully smile.gif
