Hi all,

My freind's in the process of sorting out a residency at club/winebar. The booth is poorly equipped with some tiny monitors with blown drivers. He's had a moan to the manager, who's agreed to sort it out.

My mate's asked if I could make a few recommndations.
What's needed is a mixer (with booth control) amp and monitors.

On the mixer front a DJM 500 sprang to mind as it's pretty standard on installs. On the cheaper side a Stanton RM100 (gary, have they sorted the dip on the crossfader).

So Guys suggest away?

Just spoken to mate while typing this and he's keen to err on the side of cheapness! now where's the fun in that...

Awwww! you wemembered rolleyes.gif ...

Yes! Stanton have indeed modified ALL new RM-100's with Dipless crossfaders which now have a lovely mixing curve on them and better channel headroom to boot... GGrrrrr!!! I said to them...GGGRRRR!!!...and they changed it...RESULT!!!)

I'd rate the RM-100 above the DJM-500 and 600 (with the except of the effects of course). Its a lovely mixer to work with, and looks neat in its shiny silver colour too...

Dont forget that you can also adjust booth output on the booth amplifier anyway.

For booth speakers:- JBL Control 1's arent bad, and they handle upto 125 W RMS per speaker (Although I've found realistically that 100W is more acceptable). You can get a pair for around the £130 mark.

Amplifier:- Well Our Soundlab SP250 (2x 125 @ 4 ohms) is a consideration. Or the high quality 1U Ohm Studio Monitor Amp (2x 100W).

If cost is a major consideration then at a push go for a pair of high power active speakers / Monitors which have a built in Amp. Just connect the mains, and the inputs to the line level "booth output" of your mixer and away you go!. If you really need to do this on cost, then at least go for Hi-Fi / Studio Active Monitors rather than Computer PC Monitor Speakers which boast "700 Watts Power" and actually only deliver a tinny 5W RMS wacko.gif

"Dont forget that you can also adjust booth output on the booth amplifier anyway" The Wharfdale have some powered monitors, they're on the short list for this very reason. Must check that they've a basic eq.

The RM-100 is definately more mobile friendly in terms of shape.

Chris, have you anything that you think will fit the bill? (typed this before I saw your post Chris).

The JBls are cracking little speakers (used to have a pair) but looking for something with a little more oomph. Nice sounding metal tweeter though.

how times have changed, back in the 80's no club had monitors, and most had pretty rubbish sound systems as well.

when I worked at Raquels in Basildon all they had was a 200+200w system and the club held over 1,000 people. no vary speed decks either.

in the 80's the best mixer was a guy called Froggy (he's still pretty good) who used a telephone to cue his mixes up (he still does as well. that when mixing was difficult, tunes in differant keys, no clean beats to mix. unlike now.

but hey thets progress
