i have already set aside money and currently saving up for Technics turntables....

which model number should i get?
and what kind of that model number (i.e. SL-1200MKII or the SL-1200M3D?)

also, would i be able to use studio monitors (computer speakers) for listening to my music (from my TTs and mixer?)? i'm looking at one with a subwoofer (amp in it) and 2 speakers.....

Essentially, the main operational difference between the two decks is that the "original" MK2 pitch slider has a "click" at the zero point, halfway along the slider. The MK3 doesnt... If I remember correctly, the MK3 has been superceded by the MK5 anyway in the last couple of months.. (the MK4, if you're wondering, was a Far East/Asia Pacific release only).

Now the MK3 hasnt(hadnt) been out all that long, so why make more changes? Well, on another DJ forum which I used to participate heavily in, several DJ's were commenting on "wandering" or failing Pitch sliders... OK, I'd be the first to say that it could have been co-incidence, but only the MKII owners who fiddled internally with their Pitch settings (easy to do, but very difficult to return to factory settings, and impossible without a frequency counter to get two decks Pitch controls snyc'd up again), had any reason to post about Pitch control issues.

The "click" incdiently is a bit like the resistance that you normally feel when in the dead centre of a Hi-fi's Balance control, when rotating it from from Left to Right. Its a positive tactile (feel) confirmation that you're at ZERO pitch.

The "click" is also one of those things that DJ's, and the industry seem to be in two minds about. Here's the two viewpoints:

We like the click: It tells us (by feel) that we're back at ZERO. Handy, when we're taking a tune from say -2 to Zero, but having to look elsewhere at the time eg: The audience, the mixer, the effects unit, the display, my beer etc..

or...

We dont like the click: When trying to beat-match in my headphones, instead of touching my records, I frequently shove the pitch control up to max and down to Min, at differing intervals to bring the new record into sync, with the one playing. The brief pause/resistance that I get at ZERO is simply in the way.

and...

The slider sometimes "falls into the click" if I need to set it at a very very close position to Zero...eg: +.05.

(The solution to this second one is easy...simply increase/decrease the pitch on the OTHER deck slightly, so that the deck that you're cueing can be pitched a little further away from the Zero...)

Personally, (as if it didnt come out in my descriptions above), I prefer the CLICK at zero...its a personal thing for each and everyone of us, I guess.
