Wow! A 2000f !!! Did you do Noahs leaving do on the Arc with that?

It was a great machine and a "standard" within clubs and other installations circa early 90's.
Whilst Denon have all common parts for all current CD-decks in stock in the UK, rarely required parts, and parts for discontinued decks (the 2000f was superceded and ceased some years back) are currently only held by Denons main rare spares section in Germany.
Are you sure that whatever problems that you're having with the ol' girl are laser related - and nothing that a CD lens cleaner wouldn't resolve.
Aside from all that, of course,

Hi Steve, welcome here. You have certainly found the right place for Denon advice

It would probably be chaeper to replace the whole unit rather than send it to Charles Hyde & son or one of the other Denon recommended repaeir agents. Bear in mind that Denon UK (ie Hayden Labs) do NOT do out of waranty repairs. they only offer service to items that are still in warranty. Everything else is farmed out ( as I recently found!)
Time for new investment unless CPC have the lazer required.

have you taken a look at the new 4500?
you could do worse than upgrade to this fine new unit..

Back in ye olde worlde days of the Denon 2000F, while CD technology was pretty standard, they shared some components with other manufacturers (tactfully chosen from those manufacturers with no ideas about designing their own DJ equipment).
To this end, Sony and Sharp laser modules are interchangable with those modules in some DN-2000f models laser modules. A quick phone around got me prices between £39 and £49 for either of these compatibles. These prices are for parts only, and were quoted as being "in stock" for next day/3 day delivery - you'd then need a competant audio repair centre to install.
A valid alternative (or 2) might be Ebay, where there are currently 2 x DN-2000f units, allegedly fully working - one for about £70, the other for about £90 (This morning). This way, you'd get a whole spare control unit, and a whole spare drawer/laser unit, and a control lead - for less than the purchase of 2 x laser modules and spares.

I managed to repair my own Denon 2500 by buying a replacement laser sled / spindle motor mechanism from www.grandata.co.uk. The price was less than £20 at the time and the replacement was very easy to fit. I checked its alignment with everything I could throw at it - even some CDRW discs work!
For less than £20 each you can't really go wrong.
Chances are, any playback related issues (crackling, mis-tracking) are more than likely down to the spindle motor not running at the right speed (bearings wearing out etc) before the laser dies. You'll probably start to notice it on later tracks (on full CDs) before you'd notice it on CD singles. It'll sound a little like intermittent white noise mixed in with the music at first and as the motor gets even more out of kilter you'll get skipping or stutterring. Eventually the player won't even be able to read a disc let alone attempt to play it.
I had a quote from a registered Denon repairer of about £50 per side (inc labout & VAT) to fit a new mech and line it up - not a bad price at all considering...
Another thing to watch out for on some early models of Denon is the lubricant used on the drive tray sled. According to Denon they found out it reacted with a chemical which is present in most fog fluids - which turned the lube to a very sticky substance like glue! (not good). So any issues with the drawers opening & closing roughly will probably be down to this very issue ;)

Hi juski your read your reply and you are spot on.
Thats what it did and now cd1 won't even read a disc cd 2 is perfect.
I mainly use a pc now but I still have a lot of stuff on disc not in the pc,like the daft request last week clair n friends but I cant justify spendin hundreds on a new cd players to only use it now and again.
Oh dont no if you have any idea of if it has anything to do with it sometimes it takes 3 to 4 atempts to boot up but not all the time.

again for the advice.

Yes indeedy - however this was discovered (by most pro CD-player manufacturers) pretty much the very same year that the first CD-player ever went into a club/disco environment, so the lube problem was spotted and rectified straight away.
This is not a problem for Denon units made in the last 15~ years.
Incidently the lubricant in domestic/household players isnt normally the newer "smoke-friendly" lube.

Hmmm..
When you say 'not booting up' do you mean the display lights up but there's nothing displayed on it & none of the buttons work?
It could only be that the EPROMs need re-seating (unplug em and plug them back in again)... or it could be indicative of another problem.
Failing that - the dodgy spindle motor could itself be the cause of the problem.

Oh I dunno.
About four years ago we had a dodgy denon in the club whose drawers got stuck a lot... but that could have been caused by people catching them on belt buckles etc.. (why do installers insist on putting CD players in at waist height?!).
Gary
Aug 2 2005, 05:25 PM
Yes, catching the drawers on things is real "fun" ...

and a hazard when the drawers are open - slot-in drives get around this of course, but have their own actual and percieved issues themselves too.
All recent Denon CD-decks have had a set of menu's called "PRESETS" which (amongst other things) allow the user to set the number of seconds that the CD-drawer stays open for, before Auto-closing. eg: In a tight space/booth, you might want to set the Auto-close time to just 10 seconds, instead of 1 min etc.
