THE VJ BUSINESS

About the course
VJ-ing is a growing business in the music industry as well as for presenting brand identity in new and original ways. Whilst many learning centres now give workshops on how to use VJ tools, this course differs by focusing also on the broader aspects of this field, like planning budgets and timescales, be it for a club gig or for corporate contracts.

What you will gain from the course
This course sets out to give basic business skills to aspiring VJs and moving image artists on how to organize their work into a sustainable production enterprise.

Who is it for?
This class is aimed at people seeking to capture a comprehensive view of the VJ scene, from its history, its tools, to managing VJ projects and budgets. Although no particular experience is required to join the class, a working knowledge of computers is essential, as well as a genuine enthusiasm for working with moving images in an experimental way.

Course Outline

Morning
An overview of the past and present leaders of the VJ industry.
Getting familiar with VJ Hardware and software.

Afternoon
Planning a VJ Storyboard.
Delivering an effective VJ performance on time and on budget.

About the facilitators
A moving image artist based in London since 1999, Olivier Sorrentino sits at the crossroads between design, cinema and live arts, delivering sound reactive video performances to ever increasing audiences, as he’s been voted amongst the world’s top ten VJs of 2004 by DJ Magazine.

Also known as VJ Anyone, he has played alongside some of the top players in the music industry (Tiesto, Darren Emerson, 2 Many DJs, GusGus, Seb Fontaine, Ritchie Hawtin) in world renowned venues (Pacha/Ibiza, Fabric/London, Womb/Tokyo, Chemistry/Amstersam), international media festivals (ISEA, ZKM, Machinista), Charity funds (GreenPeace, World DJ Fund) and branding parties (Sony PSP, Top 100 DJs, Diesel).

Some of Olivier Sorrentino’s additional projects include curating VJ works at the ICA cinema (VJ Cult), running the VJs.net booking agency as well as teaching masterclasses, workshops and leading conference lectures about the art of VJ-ing.

Anybody interested in VJ'ing we have the VJ from Passion doing a demo at Mobile DJ Show North. His name is SteveG and i think his website is http://www.vjsteveg.com/.
not just plugging, but he going to use all commercially available kit pioneers etc.. to prove how easy it is for mobile dj's to do VJ'ing.

I keep hoping that balance will be restored within the dismissive but potential marketplace of VideoJock'ing.

People are lured into thinking "I wouldn't mind dabbling in video mixing in my shows" but then have the dream dashed when they discover that the only pictured/talked about DVD-deck (Pioneer DVJ-X1) are £2599 EACH (a mere £5198 per pair. Add to that, the cost of your video mixer, which is an extra, oh and a projector, or plasma screen, or 2. That sort of cash is obviously nothing to a nightclub, but anyone they have in to VJ for them is unlikely to have a £5000 pair of DVJ-X1's at home to practice his/her routines and sets on. I fear that this price barrier (even if it does the usual "Pioneer cha-cha slide" down to half price in 18 months) will lead to lack-lustre in-club performances, due to lack of practice hours.

Much more practical and cost-effective is the Numark DVD-01. Its a dual rackmount DVD unit, which plays audio CDs too of course, is only £550 all in (inc VAT) and doesnt need a video mixer for "most" DVD video applications. And, its "cheap" enough for a VJ to have one at home to really put one through its paces, prior to using it "live" at a club, or mobile venue.

True, the Numark DVD-01 doesnt have a vinyl-like platter - its all buttons, rather than wheels, and its looping isnt seamless (plus looping video is an awful effect to audience, its not as acceptable as looping audio), but the average DJ would be able to get into VJ'ing for only the cost of 3 (ish) gigs, rather than 50+ gigs.

VJ gear manufacturers need, imo, to offer more of these sorts of VJ familiarisation sessions FREE of charge, whilst the market is in its "stir some interest" phase.

sorry should have said we'll be demo'ing the numark as well
Dukesy
I totally agree - the manufacturers don't stir enough interest and have not considered the mobile DJ enough - down to us again, eh?

Have purchased the Pioneer DVJX1's and the Numark DVD system (which I'll use for back-up).
Unlike resident Club VJ's, I'll be using the systems mobile.

Will add a VJ feature including experience, music and production, licence info and free advice for anyone interested in the near future including where to get discounted music DVDs and VJ equipment.
