its a scam, you quote them £300 they send you a cheque for £600 by mistake so to save the hassle of writing you another cheque they ask you refund them the £300 difference once the cheque has cleared, usually by bank transfer. The next thing you know even though the cheque seemed to have cleared the bank suddenly withdraw it because it is a fraudulant cheque or linked to money laundering and the original £600 deposit is worthless, leaving you £300 out of pocket. Did it come from a yahoo address by any chance? you only have to look at the way in which they spell check to see that there is a high chance it has originated from outside of the UK

A clever scam, but really it amazes me how people fall for this stuff, there was a story about a little granny in this area that had fallen for a scam where she had been told that she had won a large amount of money and to get her hands on it had to send £10k, she did it and lost her total savings.
I feel for this little old lady but there really are some very stupid people out there, if its too god to be true, it really is.....
Another one thats doing the rounds is the year planners again.....they call you asking you to advertise on a year planner or activity book for the local childerns cancer ward, you advertise and pay for your ad, the claimed 200,000 copies never get seen by anyone except for the advertisers who each get 3 copies, I checked them out and the ward they claim to represent never exists, the charity numbers are not right either, and the callers are always from Liverpool, on a blocked number and they wont give you an address or name etc etc, theyhang up pretty quick if you ask too many questions as well.

Trust no one and THINK - use common sense. It amazes me too, as CK's has pointed out, how many fall for this stuff
