Just pondering in traffic and I wondered if a full time DJ is any better than a part time one. I know it's an impossible one to answer but I just thought it might provoke a bit of banter between the full timers and the part timers.
I have my own opinions, but I;d like to hear yours first.
So, are full time DJ's better DJ's than part time DJ's?

Its the normal some-some situation really.
There are bound to be some full-time DJ's which are better than some Part-time DJ's, but also there would be some part-time DJ's better than some full-tme DJ's.
True, if you only did one gig a month, you might not be quite so "finger-on-the-pulse" when it comes to up-to-the-minute releases, but then if you're out 5 nights a week, you might not be able to keep upto date with anything other than which new track goes well with which other new track. So requests for "That track that they use on the telly?" might pass you by...

Nothing really to do with full or part time, it's about the passion

i dont think full or part time comes into it when it comes to actual djing ability, but being full time helps when it comes to the paperwork side managing the phone calls, visiting dj shops to check out kit and the one hundred and one other things you have to do and the clients think its so easy turn up an hour before play pack up and go.

I'm glad you mentioned this Brian. My theory is that the passion for a full time DJ diminishes as they do more gigs - it becomes much more of a business than a fun passtime. Whereas the part timers have loads more time off and will therefore get more excited pre-gig which will hopefully come through on the night.
The flip side, of course, is that the full timers will probably have better equipment and be better equiped to deal with many types of situation due to their experience. Their approach will be impeccable and their shows tight; but will the enthusiasm be as strong as someone with a quarter of the work?
Devils advocate signing off...

Im part time as a dj but really love doin it, so if you love it...you always make sure you do yer best. Prefer DJing to electrics really if i was to be honest! But i do tend to get a bit stressed by worrying if its gunna be a good night etc
I'm a part time DJ as well, which means I don't have to work if I don't want to. My mate is a full time Jock and he is always moaning at me when I turn jobs down because I think they might be a bit stiff!!! I've always worked like this because I don't feel I could put 100% into every gig I did, if I was out too much. I admire people who are full time, the DJ at the nightclub where I work is out 6 nights a work but he does admit that 95% of the time he goes into autopilot. Mind you at £800 per week I think I would be the same!!!!
