I noticed in another thread that Paul (Hi Fidelty) mentioned School Disco and Rock and Roll, two names for the type of music played, do you use these terms, I would never of thought of Andy Williams as School Disco, and have no idea what Happy Hardcore Funk is
Is it because of the type of function I do, but people ask for 1960's to todays sounds, not School Disco, Acid House etc etc etc.
I got a telephone call on Saturday, whilst with Marky Marc, and they wanted Happy Hardcore. i turned the booking down.

I think it is very dangerous when people refer to their favourite music by a generalistic term. Christ, we have enough differences over well known and easily definable music such as Motown - create a new genre, throw a few sub-genre's in for good measure and then let everyone argue over what is what.
When someone asks me for a particular type of music I always ask them to quote some tracks - artist and song title, most of the time they are hard pushed to come up with anything. Show them a CD with Happy Hardcore as the title and they don't recognise any tracks on it.
I think I need some caffeine.

EXACTLY MY POINT!!!! I don't drink coffee, I used a term and you assumed I meant one thing when I meant something completely different!

Same here, not only from the point of view that I'm now certain that those who ask for "Got anything from ..."[this group][that genre]" are almost certainly not going to dance to what generalisation they've asked for- they'll just nod their head and talk about the last time they heard that track (watch out for this especially now when anyone who went to Live8 asks for any band/artist who appeared at Live8 - they wont dance - they'll just bore everyone around them stupid with "Oh yes, I was there" stories...
The other "Got anything from..." kick in the teeth for DJ's is where you play "anything from..." and the person later tells you "Oh, you never played what I wanted" and when you tell them that you played such-and-such a track to honour their request, they say "Oh, I didn't mean that track though, I was thinking more along the lines of their earlier/later/more uptempo/more downtempo/lyrical/instrumental/dancy/mellow [insert sub-genre here] stuff..."
Hence, I'd always suggest that we ask for specific tracks in reply to "got any.....?" requests.
I'm not even convinced that the record industry like to get their tracks defined by genre either. I recall Craig David tracks (not remixes) appearing on almost every type of "Best of Genre" album going, from R'n'B, pop, soul, hip-hop, to funk.

i get asked for songs all the time in a terminolgy setting although the ones i use are well (sounds daft) but establised terms so to speak such as old skool where i,am confident in what type of music, songs and era the music is from and sounds like
others where i beleive to be open to interpretation where you could class songs under many headings are such as; jive, motown etc
(i may have gone a bit

here me thinks)

Not much point in Genre when so many people are confused.
When asked for a style of music, I always ask them for an example, just to find out if my definition is the same as theirs.
It doesn't help when djs don't know. A certain forum with voted top track lists had some voting for Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy, Breaky Heart as Britpop!!!!!
