I have a ProSound (yeah I know Maplin's) 1000 watt back up amp.

I got it secondhand (damn you eBay!) and when I finally plugged it in it doesn't work.

I opened it an changed the fuses (the board said 5amp but it had 10 in them) so put both 5's and 10s in and each time I switch the amp on "BANG" both fuses in there pop straight away.

Anyone any ideas smile.gif or did I just buy a well duff product? sad.gif

Sounds like the Output stage (MOSFET / BI-POLAR Transistors) have failed and gone short circuit. This is usually the main cause of fuses blowing in Amplifiers and unless you know what you are doing isn't something that you can easily replace yourself sad.gif

Less likely are the failure of the main rectifier diodes failing this can also cause fuse failure, but i'm virtually sure that you'll find it's the output stage failed.

I can repair it, (so can most Hi-Fi / TV repair shops if you don't fancy sending it via carrier to me). Expect to pay around £30 - £70, depending on the severity of the failure and the type of transistors used in the design.

chances are, (by the fact that 10A fuses have been fitted) the sellor is more than aware of the problem. In fact by replacing 5A fuses with 10A fuses the original owner had possibly made a simple repair into a full output stage replacement. If a fuse blows it's usually for a very good reason, and never replace it with tin foil or a higher rated fuse. excl.gif

Yeah E-bay is littered with Crap and You have no come back on the buyer whatsoever. With the price of amps falling all of the time, why risk buying 2nd hand?.
