I've just asked my OtsDJ to tally up the 'most played' songs for the 2004/05 wedding season and here is my top 25 song list. I must admit to being a bit surprised at some, but bear in mind that this list includes the dinner music timeframe. Comments? Any real surprises there for anyone?

Never heard of the Yakoo Boys!!

Bit surprised Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" is in there, is he big over there Richard?

Other than that, no big surprises, very similar to the sort of stuff I play.

I Will Survive... Do many people play this at weddings?? I have only ever played it about twice in the last five years of weddings - Not really the ideal wedding song.. Bit like Band Of Gold.....

Other than that, Kenny Rogers and the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers tracks.... Not really the main wedding tracks we can play here as a lot of people currently getting married are under 30 and any country and western that isnt the Mavericks... And even that is under protest from them..

As kingy says, few surprises (except perhaps the Live version Sweet Caroline). I tend to avoid Live versions of any track if at all possible, since the audio quality is normally far less than a studio recording, and the reaction of one audience hearing a second audience cheer/applaude etc, when the other audience isnt, seems to be an unwanted element on the dancefloor.

The other surprise was "Mike Flowers Pops" in your top 25. Despite them doing a very likeable version of Oasis' Wonderwall (preferable to the original in some cases) about a decade ago, MFP have attained a kind of one-hit-wonder, novelty band status here - sort of a (n even) less popular version of Black Lace. rolleyes.gif

One question though - were these the top tunes that you've selected to play, or were they specific requests for that artist singing that song? The reason why I ask, and make that distinction, is that I would normally play 4 or 5 certain tunes at a mixed age group function, whether the audience request those tunes or not. Therefore, those tunes would effectively rocket to the top of my systems "Top 25" list (if my system counted plays) but wouldnt neccesarily give a true reflection of audience favourites.

Kenny Rogers 'Gambler' is a massive pub sing-along track that seems to appeal to anyone who is drunk enough to have a laugh with their mates. When you get a crowd that's in good voice, drop it in at +4% tempo. You'll be very surprised at how well it can work. Everyone knows the words regardless of age or background.

The Yakoo Boys track 'Pipe Dreams' is basically a bagpipe version of 'Scotland The Brave' with the same techno dance beat as 'Cottoneye Joe'. My beatmix drops it in near the end of the Rednex track, so the last minute gets everyone switching from the roundhouse bluegrass redneck dancing to Scottish Highland dancing (sort of!). It's BRILLIANT!

Yep, it is THE handbag anthem, gets played at nearly every function

The only surprise was Mr Jones' sex change biggrin.gif

Sorry.

It looks a lot like the lists the US DJ's put up - I agree with the earlier comments about the genres. I don't do many weddings, but those I've done have tended to be a mix of chart and 80's / 90's indie stuff, as far as requests go. Apart from that it's the usual 50's / 60's stuff for the Grans and some 70's cheese.

Interesting how similar countries go for different things.

Cheers,

Jack.

"I Will Survive" is a massive hit with the girls. It's the "I don't need you, I'm a strong, independant woman" thing I think. That's just an assumption- I'm just a meek male after all.....

lol Jack! My bad.

I haven't worked out how to get OTS to tell me the most popular tunes however I would agree with at least 10 of the 25.

I play The Gambler when asked and feel sure that it would show in my top 30 but the surprising thing for me is. like Richard, that I also play it at +4% tempo to give it that extra something.................I just find it weird that here's two of us on opposite sides of the world and the same thing works............beam me up Scotty.

Another tempo trick is playing warm-up/background tunes at a slower tempo eg: -2% ~ -4% for those times where you DONT want anyone dancing yet. Works best if your system has Master Tempo, or the newer Key Adjust functions to stabilise the vocals, so that Lucie Silvas doesnt sound like Darth Vader...

Hi Paul, you use a little freeware prog called OtsView. It's only 906 KB, so if you'd like me to email it to you, flick me an email to richard@disco.co.nz and I'll send it.
C.S
Only use about 5 of that list at weddings here.

I should mention that the tracks that appear like this:

John Paul Young, Barry Manilow, Doobie Brothers, Chic, Donna Summer
Love Is In The Air, Copacobana, Long Train Running, Le Freak, Hot Stuff

are beatmixed sets that I've put together in the studio using Mixmeister, so they are perfect, clean, professional mixes every time.
