i used to work for an agent - Ace Disco's - based in london and he was a bit lazy - he would leave it till friday night to tell me what gigs he had the nxt day - however i was only 17 at the time so couldnt have gone anywhere else!
Now i do alot of work for another company but he's nnot specifically an agent - weve become good mates and he just takes £20 for each booking as a deposit. i much prefer this to working for someone i dont know.
HHowever - if youve been with the same guy for 4 years then he really has no excuse for screwing you over now - if i were u i would ask him whats going on

This could almost be a title of one of those American shows..."When Good Agents Go Bad!"
I've got a good philosophy in life.....I don't trust anybody

.
Even those who you have worked for or known for years and regard as friends can turn around and kick you in the

Always watch your back - this business is strewn with accurate and expert knife throwers who can hit a back from miles away. (Present company excluded of course).
Whether you regard an agent as a friend or not, forget the "Gentlemans Agreement" and get something in writing, business and friendship can mix, but only if the business side is agreed in writing.

Its not that im not getting work or that its not all official with contracts, its just he does not seem to promote me or try to get canalation fees and instead of dealing with the clients he just gives them my mobile number for me to deal with. He recentally told a client that i would play on for just £20 a hour even though im all ready playing 7 till 3am i was shocked at the low price im getting good money for the do but £20 a hour after 3 is just pathetic.
I landed a 4 night a week residency on my own i was asked and they did not want to go via my agent so i told him i was just doing fridays as he only mainly ever got me fri and sat except xmas and paid him 10% not the usual 17.5% as a good will gesture as im contracted full time with him. as the club shuts down between the middle of june till sept i expected him to get me more work during this time as i had been paying him for the fridays, he has got me some but mainly just my usual saturdays.
Is it me or am i just moaning!!

This looks a little more "indepth" than first appeared. It sounds like your "agent" in an employment biz, as oposed to an "agent".
Did you have a "sole contract", you worked for him and no one else (thats the way it reads), so when you told him that you had found a resident venue, you might of upset him a bit, and you would be in breach of contract (verbal or written).
Agencies have many different ways of operating, but they do have to work within the employment act (blah blah, been here before I thinks).
If your unsure, email me and we'll arrange to speak.

If you 'rely' on agents too much you will never get the better paid gigs and never make a name for yourself, hence no money. Try advertising yourself and then when he calls you on a Friday tell him you are booked, he'll be hard pushed to find any DJ, let alone a good one on a Saturday for that evening's gig.

Im contracted as a soul agent and my agent did and does get me good work for fri and sat i know i broke the contact rules but i did not go looking for the residency mon tues thurs fri which left sat free still, otherwise i would of left him. I would leave my agent and work on my own but a cant work at nearly 90% of the venues near me without my agent coz of contract rules.

I do believe that the clauses restricting working at a venue within a period of time are illegal under European law, as it is a restraint of trade.

I would have thought that a fair contract in these circumstances (ie when you are committed soley to him) is that he would also guarantee you so much work per month/year?? I know of a band that has this in their contract.

Our agency admin is made up of djs who either have worked or still do work as jocks,We meet often and set our bookings nearly 2 months in advance. (we can do this as we have built up a large customer base and any dj who is not doing a mobile is put into a club or has a day off) We have one dj and rig on stand by every weekend in case of last minute bookings. We all pay a monthly fee into a pot which is used to run the agency,we all work for each other

. This agency was started by djs for djs after years of being ripped off and stitched up by lazy money grabbing agents trying to make a quick buck
