Kingy asked me to do a bit on this type of music so here goes.
The dancing is partner dancing on a straight 8 beat but not too rock and roll, this type of jive is not so 'extreme'. The prefered genres are:- Popular music 'classic rock' some swing blues jazz.
I got involved by going to a few dance lessons then the instructor was looking for a mobile disco to cover his regular Saturday night set in the local town hall. The great thing about providing the music for the dances is that people will always get up and dance as soon as they walk in the door so from 8pm to 11.30 there are people dancing. They also are not affraid to ask for their favourite tunes of which I can now most of the time cover if not I should have it by the next dance.
I leave request slips on the tables which has been a great idea. It has my phone number on so hopefully I can and do get other bookings and when they hand them in I can spend time finding them- memory like a sieve.

I will now show you part of my last play list so you can get the full effect:-

Dire Straits MTV
Queen Crazy little thing called love
Kenny Logins Foot Loose
B52 Love Shack
Cyndi Lauper I Drove all night
Bryan Adams Only Think that looks good on me is you
Fine Young Canibles You Drive me Crazy
Robert Palmer Adicted to Love
Steve Winwood Valerie
Fleetwood Mac Don't Stop
Tom Jones Mama Told me
Texas I Don't need a Lover
Chris Rea Road to Hell
Van Morrison Right Side of the Road
Andrew Strong(Commintments) Mustang Sally
Gary Moore Cold Day In Hell
Micheal Buble Sway / Moondance
Ellis Baxter Murder on the Dance floor
Kylie Can't Get You Out Of My Head

That about half a playlist then go for the requests

It's quite a good gig to get into I just I hope I can keep it fresh. I have now been booked upto New Years Eve 2006 which is another 17 fixed dates biggrin.gif So I must be doing something right.

Kingy
Nice one Anne. I for one, didn't know anything about this.

Good set list too!

Do you take lights for this sort of job?
AJS Mobile Disco
Yes I do have lights but they are not DMX, I haven't gone down that road Yet!
I have 2 Par Cans 2 Wild Blaze lights and a moondot. As well as my Logo light screen. They are enough to light a very large hall.

High Fidelity
Sounds brilliant and very enjoyable Anne.

Wouldn't mind doing something like that myself.

Will have to go and dig out the Yellow pages methinks.
AJS Mobile Disco
If anyone is at a loss for something to do on the 4th June in Pickering Memorial Hall it's a pay on the door. You even get a 20min lesson thrown in so you get to know some of the steps.
