Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get the steppetr motors used in Abstracts VR8?

I need 3 of these & Abstract are quoting £105 which will make the repair uneconomical!

Please help

Is there the name of a manufacturer printed on the motor somewhere, Abstract don't make their own motors, they just buy other peoples smile.gif . This information could be on the voltage / spec plate or a label on the motor itself. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a motor direct from the manufacturer or one of their service agents, than to buy from the actual lighting manufacturer!. Also we may be able to find a cheaper equivalant motor from elsewhere.

Also, are you 100% certain it is the motor which has failed?.

Yes Farnell of Leeds do the appropriate steppers. You just need to choose Microstepping ones, (1.2 degree) and Unipolar drive (ie 6 wire). The cheaper ones are correct, don't order the hybrid technology variety as the VR8's don't need it. Shaft sizes are normally 6mm and they mostly all come from Taiwan / Far East. Double check the physical size and you should be ok.

By the way, stepper motors are ultra reliable - are you sure they're gone? Jittering action is caused by a driver chip fault or sometimes an open circuit cable if it's the mirror Y-axis thats playing up. Occasional loss of a step is caused by weak magnetism as a result of overheating of the effect, or dry joints on the pcb.

Also there is a set of numbers on the bac of the mirror, in the settings on the light (don't know where), they have to be the same or the motor drifts and also VR8's have a problem called sticky keys, its a programing problems, but it only occurs in some computer based programs.

Was that more helpful than my last post C.S??? tongue.gif
