I have just visited a customer who spent her student years in NZ, she has booked me for her 40th. Most guest will be from this side of the planet, but a few will be from back home. We discussed music, on the whole, it will be no problem.
Now I want to get an idea of what would have been played in the early 80s in NZ at parties. Anything I can surprise her with from back home?
Cheers,
Brian

How about Split Enz - "I Got You"? That was around 1980/1. Saw the Finn Brothers play it on tour last year - still sounds good.
Cheers,
Jack.

Sorry about the delay in responding- I have been a busy boy and haven't been on the forum much of late. Brian, I'm impressed with the research you're putting in for your client- it shows dedication and professionalism. Here are a few tried & true Kiwi 80's hits for you to hunt down:
The Dudes - Bliss
The Swingers - Counting The Beat
Split Enz - I Got You
The Mockers - Forever Tuesday Morning
The Exponents - Why Does Love Do This To Me (This one is HUGE!)
The Exponents - What Ever Happened To Tracey
Dragon - Rain
Dave Dobbyn - Loyal
Dave Dobbyn - Slice Of Heaven
DD Smash - Outlook For Thursday
Dave & The Dynamos - Life Begins At 40
Patea Maori Club - Poi E
Be warned- some of these tracks might grow on you. I play "Why Does Love Do This To Me" when I'm in the middle of a big sing-along rock music set and hit the intro with big volume. It's got an awesome bass guitar intro that just juices Kiwi crowds up something brilliant!
Flick me an email to richard@disco.co.nz if you have trouble locating these tracks in the UK and I'll see what we can organise. When's the event?
Also....
Crowded House, Split Enz and many other popular Aussie artists are actually Kiwis. It's OK that some of you don't know that- many Australians don't know that!

No- that would be Australia. They were the penal colony......

Hey - I picked a song that is on Richard's list - I'm impressed with myself LOL.
And just to be the musical pedant that I am, I'd have to side with the "Crowded House were Australian" camp, seeing that Nick Seymour and Paul Hester (who died very recently) were Aussies. Of course, I'd also argue that AC/DC were Scottish given that Angus and Malcolm Young and Bon Scott were all born over here.
I'll go now LOL.
Jack.
