I agree it would be a good idea to start a forum just for playlists. Here is mine from a 40th I did a couple of months ago, which was a bit different from what I would normally do for a 40th. The guy I did it for was into 70's & 80's alternative/rock/punk and he said most of his guests would be too, so he asked me to bias it that way with some party and chart stuff thrown in.

I took requests most of the night and the eighty plus people there enjoyed themselves with the bonus of me taking two new bookings from it, one for a Goth night!

I wouldnt play track 60 on your list at a public function.......... and in private i would burn it....
ryandio
With respect to Gary Glitter, I know what you mean, but its still requested, and is still a guaranteed floorfiller. I tend to use it sparingly nowadays, and I have had a couple of comments in the past. But where do you stop, Micheal Jackson, R Kelly, Jerry Lee Lewis etc.

If it was requested by the customer I would. Music is music, no matter who it's done by.

The only ones I won't play are those with offensive or explicit lyrics, or if I know something about somebody in the room that it would give offence to.

offtopic.gif Oops sorry. Back on topic folks.

Anymore playlists?? biggrin.gif . Would be useful to keep this on topic for future reference and use. Debates about individual tracks are welcome, but please start them on a new thread smile.gif .

Surely it would be easier to have a seperate section for playlists and then a new thread for each playlist started.. then we can comment on tracks etc. I mean people are harldy going to start a new topic just for the odd comment on someones playlist....

Just a suggestion thanks.gif

I'll dig out some of my playlist to post soon...
ryandio
I agree some a seperate playlist section would be useful, to enable feedback on individual lists
Gary
If playlists were to be considered as an on going thing then perhaps a logical layout would be to have them under "Music", then "Playlists", then a topics/thread for "Wedding Playlists", a seperate thread for "40th Birthday Playlists", another thread for "18th Birthday" with new threads only started as something really different crops up eg: "Rock'n'Roll night" - "70's night" etc.

One observation with playlists is that as a recent poll here on DJU showed, the majority of DJ's would only be able to produce a playlist manually, as they're using standard methods eg: CD, vinyl, Minidisc etc. rather than the laptop/PC method which provides playlist/tracklists automatically. I, for one, wouldnt have the time to start noting down each track that I play.

Another concern is that I've seen regular playlists stored in two other on-line places (one now closed), and a certain amount of "cloning" became apparent.

Not only were playlists from experienced DJ's being instantly adopted by others, but also some of the people occasionally came under fire if their lists showed repetition between weeks eg: Last months wedding playlist was 80% the same as a playlist submitted from a wedding this month. I dont think for one moment, however, that the DJU community would plummet into the second scenario, but the cloning issue might concern some.

How many members would be interested in (and be able to) provide on-line playlists?

I must admit the playlists I have seen on-line are those on american sites and most of those are only relevent to their market.

QUOTE

That may be so, but playing somebody else’s playlist does not guarantee it will work elsewhere. They obviously can’t be bothered to read their crowd. What works at one gig even it’s the same age group or type of function may not at another.

Repetition of tracks from gig to gig is a big bitch to me. I know a resident DJ local to me that if I go to one of his gigs I can tell the time by the track he puts on and then name the next few he puts on, in order. That’s pure laziness and it is noticed by his audience, then he wonders why numbers are dwindling.

A lot of my work is residencies and apart from playing the essential chart stuff and other big tunes I try to make each night different in some way. It keeps the regulars interested and stop from drifting off to the next pub/club and me getting bored playing the same stuff week in week out.

The most interesting playlists for me would be ones for unusual types of event or theme nights. Within reason at most weddings and the like there is a certain amount of repetition of songs, that being the nature of the beast.

This is so true.

We can play our regular venues 2 weeks apart, with the same customers, but a totally different mood. What they want will be completely at odds with the last show.
Gary
Ok, so far we've got Ryandio and Digital Discos submitting playlists.

Is there anyone else that would like to/be able to submit playlists. Just to get an idea of numbers?

What would be useful, is if the playlists could indicate whether the track was played by the DJ's selection, or the audiences request.
Danno13
Yep... i agree with Gary about having the seperate section but i still think we need a new topic for each playlist... then we don't get told to start a new topic when someone comments on a playlist... you see what i mean? It could all get a bit confusing.

So, if everytime someone wanted to post a olaylist they wrote in the title the date and the occasion then people would easily be able to look at the playlists they liked.

I also don't think cloning would be an issue, as mentioned every event is different.. ok, people might pick up the odd song after seeing it in a playlist.. but thats a good thing! Nothing like re-discovering an old song or finding a new one that you would have never thought to play.

Just noticed your other post Gary.. count me in for submitting playlists.

How did these go down, were they requested by the parents. I only have played the first one once at that was a request, never played it again just dos'nt to fit in anywhere, the repetitive vocals stick in your head.

Have'nt played the Andrew WK since it was released, not a bad track, I'll have to dig it out again to see how it stands up now.

Yep... i agree with Gary about having the seperate section but i still think we need a new topic for each playlist...//...

Just noticed your other post Gary.. count me in for submitting playlists.

There could be a new thread for each playlist eg: A new post for the playlist of the wedding on the 1st, a new post for the playlist for the wedding of the 8th, and so on... under a "Weddings" section, in a "Playlist" section, in the existing "Music" section. Although it would mean putting Chris to work on his birthday. 139.gif fish.gif

An alternative would be for those endowed with playlist pasting potential to simply add their playlists to their "How did it go?"/"how was is for you?" thread in the existing section.

Its one of those forum additions which Chris could add if more than a few members wanted it.

As for the cloning aspect which I mentioned earlier, its not so much the cloning/re-playing of the whole list which has previously been an issue on two UK on-line places, but more the swiping of sections/genres eg: the whole of the Reggae part of someone elses playlist, or the whole of someone elses R&B section and so on. - however, its only a concern, not a reason enough to prevent a playlist section being added if theres enough interest.
Danno13
Ahh.. i'm with you now.. yeah that sounds like a good idea. I don't think it would work very well in the How did it go post each week as it would make the thread too long and a pain to have to go through every page. So, a seperate section and then sub-sections for each type of event if need be would be great! biggrin.gif

I reckon just add the sections and then see how it goes.. i mean you've nothing to loose but a few minutes adding them. At least if they are there people will go ahead and use them whereas if you ask "would you use it?" some people might not even notice the topic or not be vocal enough to say that they would.. if you follow.

DEVIL works really well in a dance set...I play it fairly often but they have to be the more dancier crowd.

Andrew Wk - Party Hard was probably the best tune of the night went down a storm quite literally!

November Rain- Was requested and it's not a song I tend to play very often..

Oh and the parents were out of the room at the time but I still took it upon myself to drop some samples over the naught words.
