Mine was under a tenner from a local electronics shop, not sure about hiss, but it will definitely remove mains hum.

Plugged my new laptop in last night, and didn't have a spare isolator on me, so ended up with back up laptop which doesn't need one, so am off tomorrow, when I meet C.S to buy a few more.

Has anyone tried putting the isolator inbetween the mixer out and amp rather than between the line in and laptop ?

The noise in this case is down to the laptops "earth"...
Some power supplies for lappys are compleately isolated from the mains in side. however the other type actually use the earth as te ground for the DC line.
A quick test for this is to unplug the laptops psu from the mains.
I have this, but only on systems of 2k +.
Hope this helps !
