Good-on Elvis, eh?!
Hasn't he lost a lot of weight?
Personally, I don't mind Elvis being at Number One.
Mind you, given that the current music industry is all over the place, don't you find that a lot of the gig requests now are either classic, anthems, cheesey or former hits of yester-year, slightly proving that you can't beat a good 'ol tune??!!
I'm not knocking the current releases, but even the sampled 're-vamps' and 'mix's' of ELO cutnpastes, for example, are not only catchy, but re-introduce those same 'masterpieces' to todays 'culture' (whatever that is now!!!)
Remember when James Brown was over-sampled in the 80's, or Michael Jackson riffs were layered and added with new arrangements and vocals? Pretty little has changed in re-inventing the former hit with a new style for the moment.
Computers are allowing the unknown faces out-there to manipulate with ease the material composed, performed and engineered by real musicians and studio technicians....in the comfort of either a bedroom or home studio.
I see progress on the technical level, but a step backwards for the budding musician, or vocal performer, trying to make a break into the world of the music industry unless he or she can likewise 'adapt' to modern influences and concepts.
That said, it hasn't really harmed the likes of Daniel Bedingfield to release material of a 'commercial style nature' first, and personal tastes later, or the existing artiste creative talents from Mr Bowie to DJ JXL (which brings us back to Elvis!!!)
BTW - Eric Clapton once said (on a Frank Skinner interview) that the 'new' superstars of the stage were DJs. I wonder how long that perception will last??
