Doing a heavy metal night next week, good to do something completely different every once in a while , in fact next week is a music week here and the whole town organises loads of different musical events. I know what you mean regarding Cleo Lane, but Jazz music is a very broad church covering many differant styles.
why not give Miles Davies, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, Quincy Jones or even modern day jazz by Diana Krall (the best of the modern jazz vocalists) Clare Teal. Jamie Cullem a listen

but what most people this is RNB is not in fact RNB, Eric Clapton is not a rhythm & Blues man, for real rhythm & blues try Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Dexter Gordon, or some of the greats from the 60's

Anyway, I'd probably want to vote for multiple categories (I'm very intolerant) including Heavy Rock (although I did used to go to Rock clubs in the past) and Trance.

I think that you're right about Eminem's lyrics, but his delivery is good too. He's also prepared to make fun of himself, both with his own stuff and the stuff with D12.

That would be very interesting. I'd guess that it would depend on what the non-Rap fan was actually a fan of. I'd think that a non-Rap fan who was into Jazz would come up with a very different list from a non-Rap fan who likes Rock.
I'd think though that it would tend towards the more commercial stuff (the chart style of Rap), since there are plenty of talented Rap artists (particularly UK ones like Blak Twang and Roots Manuva) who never seem to get mainstream media exposure.

The usual distinction made is that Hip-Hop is the broader culture and Rap is one part of that. Hip-Hop also includes DJ skills, b-boying, graffiti, clothes and beatboxing.
There are only 2 types of music - good music and bad music. I can't think of any genre which does not contain some songs I like. I used to think I hated C&W, but there are lots of great songs - check out Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue" or even listen to some of the stuff that Alabama 3 do (acid house country LOL.) I thought I hated rap, but like a lot of Eminem songs. I thought I hated modern jazz but love some Tommy Smith and Herbie Hancock tracks.
I don't like the kind of extreme metal that has been mentioned but grew up on hard rock. You either like a song or you don't - no genre is all good or all bad - and even if it were - it's music and, therefore, subjective.

But to be honest we will play what we are asked to like it or not but I dont do the heavey metal gigs same as the guys that do, won't do an 80's disco nite!
Each to there own,how dull would life be if we were all the same?
On a more chearfull note why not have a fun topic or get more involved in the fun topics on the forum now(silly requests strange things most popular etc)

It's a great track, isn't it? Was playing it in the car last night. Have you checked out their latest album "Outlaw"? It's fantastic. I saw them at T in the Park a few weeks ago and they were brilliant. Check out "Hello.......I'm Johnny Cash" - magic song!

I'd never heard of them the first time I saw them at V97 (or was it V96?). Anyway from that moment on I was 'into' their stuff.
It's nice to like a band nobody you know has heard of
I've not heard their newer stuff but I'll certainly check it out. When I can put the latest Beastie Boys album down, that is. Now there's a good few tracks to tax a sub...
