After a discussion with the mrs, and the fact that i am beginning to lose interest in dj'ing, i have decided to retire from the dj business after new years eve. It means i will have my sound system up for sale, which i will post in the for sale section nearer the time. I have already allocated my lights to a dj friend of mine.
On nye i will have been dj'ing for 20 years & it has come to a point where i can't really be bothered, and stand at gigs looking bored out of my brain without a care in the world. Obviously when i feel like this i'm not doing a good enough job, so this is my main reason for quitting.
I'll still be popping on here from time to time though, so u won't get rid of me that easy

What about the 2005 gigs already booked, how are you going to cover these.
I gave up once too, it last a few weeks, cost me about £2k too

I know how you feel for the the last 5years have not stoped Thur. Fri. Sat. Sun. sometimes two gigs on a Sat. It can do your braine in. so this year from about August have had a darne good BREAK

.Have left two agencyies and have done what I want to do instead of rush hear rush there . I stood back and picked the giggs that I want to do!

.
So Please stand back take a big deep breath ,Stop, Look & Listen to your heart not your head. ONCE A DJ ALWAYS A DJ. It's in the blood

Do I get the feeling that most of this decision has been made by the missus??

Sounds to me that you are still having doubts about this decision??. What is it?, the head says 'Pack it in' but the heart says ' Carry on'?
Seriously, if it's only been days since you made the decision to quit, how will you be 2 weeks after selling up?...or 6 months??. Give it some more thought before you make THE decision and don't burn your bridges unless its 100% what you want to do for YOU

. It's not just the packing in of the Disco's its all that goodwill and work that you've done and reputation to get the business this far!.
Why not make a compromise?, and just cut down on the number of bookings that you take on next year?, perhaps only work every other fortnight?, or a couple of time a month. After all you are your own boss and can pick and choose the work as it comes in, what have you got to lose by doing it this way?. Then if you fancy two weekends off in a row, then take it, but don't pack in the whole lot just on a whim.
When you work as a DJ every weekend, those odd weekends off come as a real treat, but that novelty soon wears off when 'Weekends in' become the norm, next thing you'll know it'll be Pipe and Slippers!.

Well if you still haven't sold them, then its not to late to have a change of heart!!. If he's a REAL mate, he'll understand.

It's a weird thing this DJ lark. Given the chance, it really can take over your life and for what - an hour or two of drunks singing and dancing? I've had this weekend off which was very fortunate because my three year old daughter was poorly yesterday. I spent most of the day in bed cuddling her, watching Toy Story (1 and 2) Hercules and Stuart Little. I also held her hair whilst she was sick, ahhh.
We came down in the evening and watched the X-Factor, Ant and Dec and Strictly Come Dancing.
All-in-all, I had a really lovely day with her, it helped that Saturday night TV wasn't bad for a change as well.
When she fell asleep in my arms and I carried her to bed, I thought how much I miss just being around on 'the best night of the week' with the wife, kids and dogs.
It's made me think about quitting seriously. Don't think I will just yet but it's not going to take much to convince me otherwise.
Best of luck Speedy, sell up, enjoy your Saturday night relaxation and book a holiday.

One piece of advice - Don't sell your gear yet!
Like ADS I've been there, done that. But I soon missed it.
For me the answer was to accept far less gigs, and even go the odd week without working at all. I'm also far more fussy about the gigs that I do take. (A side effect of this was that I ended up earning more per gig as well.)
So why not just not take any new bookings for now, and still do those few 2005 gigs. By the time they come around you may find your looking forward to them.

Time to get someone else in to run the show!! Just sit back and let them do all the running about!

friends of mine have been in this situation.... and decided to hand over their gigs and equipment for an unspecified time.... the best thing was, that the djs who worked for them, split the fee 50/50..... so...... keep the gear and get someone else to do the gigs til you fancy another crack at it... plus you will still be earning 50% of what you would have earned and you can have some great family time!

Give up??
STOP!
Be selective with your gigs, learn a new DJ skill that you currently don't use/have. The passion will come back

Chris is right, the problem lies where when i am working, i just don't feel in the mood to do it, but midweek i get the cd's out and twiddle a few buttons

I took the whole of october off plus 2 weekends this month and i am thoroughly enjoying it. Saying that though i may just work through december then take a break. I had a long break in 2000 when i did 5 gigs all year, compared to the 74 i've done this year so far.
The mrs has said though, that whatever i decide to do she will go with it. I'm gonna go to my room and ponder
Or is anyone working near me this saturday? I could do with some inspiration

Hi Speedy.
Decisions, decisions, eh?!
I think it might be a little to early to 'cut and run'........and as regard your friend, why not occasionally 'lend' your lights when you're not using them and let him cover the price of bulb use, etc?
Our personal circumstances can vary at any time, and you may find yourself (as the Talking Heads song lyric suggests) in a situation that may warrant a performance in the future??!!
One way of looking at it.....(or my opinion)
Cutting back on accepting bookings is one thing but 'giving' up 25 years of one area of expertise
you have is going to be slightly different, no?
Whatever your decision, I wish yo the very best of luck.

Well Speedy if you're not enjoying it & you can do without the money why not take a sabbatical.
I 'retired' for 10 years due to other work commitments and because I was feeling like you do now. I got back into it 5 years ago & enjoy it again like the 1st time.
Whether you sell/give away or hire out you gear is a choice to consider carefully but keep your music.
When I'm out at gigs I always make a point of visiting any other DJs at the same venue just to say 'Hello' and this year the common theme was 'I'm giving this up' but I bet I'll see at least some of them next year.
This is a job where you need to show enthusiasm which is hard to fake and for me the worst gig I've been to recently was one where it was obvious that the DJ was bored, fed up and didn't want to be there (no it wasn't one of mine

).
Whatever you decide Good Luck

and remember no decision has to be permanent.

I've decided to take a long break next year, and as i've seen some new lights that i like, i'm gonna sell mine and buy some new ones. As for my sound system....i'm keeping it in the living room as an expensive hifi to annoy my neighbour who plays his heavy metal shite loud most of the day, so he can have the bass'iest tune i can find booming through his wall..all 600w p/c of it
I think you have made the right decision !

In the summer I do very few gigs as I travel, and you know I soon miss the job especially when some other DJ or band is playing at a fair in the beer tent. I do a few mid week school gigs and maybe a proms but of course you feel out of it because you've stopped for a while. I think the main problem with packing in for more than the odd week is keeping in vogue with the music tastes. I still subscribe to the promo's and that is a big help to me. I wish you well speedy and I am sure you will be back soon.

A few people have given up that I know but have once again gone through the initial expense of buying new equipment......if you can store the equipment and take a break thats what I would do...
Good luck whatever you do...
