I had tried my best to put the client off but to no avail
I made the 80 mile round trip on Saturday afto to set-up early and make sure everything would be okay for the evening. As it happens, access to the building was awful - Service Road, card controlled barrier, one way streets, town centre. When I got there, I spoke to the lady in charge - her immediate reply was that she wasn't aware that a DJ had been booked...oh dear.
She swiped me in, but they'd had a card go missing and she carried the only one so I couldn't be swiped in at night. This was definitely a big problem - my van in a public car park loaded with spare gear in the centre of town on a Saturday night. I'd also have to walk a few hundred yards back and forth carrying the stuff - across two roads, mingling with the drunks.
Being a polite sort of person I guess she warmed to me and told me there was a key behind the bar that could be used to remove one of the bollards. Game on!
Anyway, the gig. Arrived on time but barmaid didn't know anything about the key - left outside, blocking access to two car-parks for about 20 minutes.
Oh, for a village hall in rural Cheshire!!
Anyways, the client had offered, and promised to bring, his own CD's. Never trust them - he forgot, even though I had been discussing them with him three hours prior.
So, it was all down to me and my, far from extensive, heavy metal selection.
Amazingly, it was pretty easy. As Kazz mentioned, it's incredible what you carry that perhaps you didn't realise. I was able to play a great mix of really heavy bands that I have never listened to in my life - Saxon, Thunder, Nazareth for example. Because they were on compilations, you know they must be 'big' songs - all safe bets.
Got a bit more commercial over buffet - Rainbow, Survivor, Def Leppard, etc. The floor was filling so I went with the Mastermix Rock CD - I play this all the time at home, me and the kids love it - my two youngest follow me playing air guitar and air drums!!
I was able to leave it on for a good 40 minutes = toilet break, grub break, chat and even a dance with the punters!
Then we announced the fancy dress results - I got a vote for looking scary even though I had gone as a cheerleader - hmmm. 19 stones squeezed into a mini skirt and boob tube obviously isn't that sexy...? I bet I was wearing less than Paula that night!
An apt tune to play following the fancy dress was Dude Looks Like a Lady.
Then decided to jump in with Madness - blokes went barmy for three minutes, so had to follow it with something for the ladies - Time Warp (original)
I was able to move into a few more fun rock tracks, culminating in Ace of Spades. Final few songs included Kiss's God Gave Rock'n'Roll to you, Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing and You'll Never Walk Alone (don't ask).
Best received track of the night? Bitter Sweet Symphony. Strange world isn't it?
Anyway, I had loads of stuff I hadn't managed to fit in and they left well happy. £50 tip this week
Final point. I played in a mini skirt and boob tube. I don't think I broke sweat all night, plus the vampress kept scratching my tummy with her, oh so sexy, nails. I may wear this gear every week...
Out of interest, it made me feel incredibly sexy, so I know just how you ladies feel when you go out in next to nothing.
