hi
ive got a radio mic (numark ws-33 single channel diversity) that i give to the punters for speaches. its got a standard off/standby/on switch.
when used from the standby to on position and on to standby theres no problems.
but when turned to the off position i get very loud interference noise.
when im running 1k it makes a few people jump.
it doesnt matter where i move the the base unit to i get same problem.
its got a small screw on back for squelch but i havent played about with that yet. could this be the problem.
have any of you had similar problems.
thanks
jim

If it's anything like radios you need to adjust the squelch with the mic turned off until the noise dissapears(sp). The squelch is a bit like a noise gate, it stops anything passing through till it detects a preset level of input signal.

Don't go any further than just stopping the noise though, or you're liable to get clipping.

Hope this helps.

I have an audio technica. Same issue.

The mic is NEVER to be turned off when the mike channel is open. The purpose of standby is to leave a pilot tone the receiver can lock onto so it doesn't repeat RFI through the system.

Adjusting the squelch will increase the amount of times that you can get away with leaving the mike off and the mike channel open, but you will still get caught. Adjusting the squelch will also reduce your range.

The whole purpose of standby is to switch the mike off briefly in those situations where you want to leave the mike channel open.

Hope this helps

thanks for reply
its quite dificult to just switch to standby cos the on/standby/off is very close together(and quite loose).
turning mic gain down on mixer solves problem but sometimes when your half way though your intro and being pestered by 2 drunk punters and in a rush to get next track
cued up you turn the bugger to standby but go too far and its off resulting in very unpleasent loud noise, which isnt very profesional
its only 3 months old. is it time to get a better radio mic or revert back to using my corded emd999 pro mic

I never had a problem with my old audio technica radio mic.

I generally use a shure mic now. Only wee small problem i get with that is the mic power on and off, not the mic standby!

With my Trantec Mic I have only got an on and off switch on it. But I find sometimes that when I turn the mic on it makes a "thump" noise if the channel is live which the mic is plugged in.
Have you tried getting in touch with the manufacturer and asking their advice ?

i will be ringing numark up tommorrow.
thanks for all the advice

as a short term solution, would it not be better just to turn the channel (on your mixer) off? wouldn't this save the hassle, leaving you to turn it to standby when your not busy?

good idea hopDJ but after using a corded mic for 20+ years you sometimes forget when put in a stressed situation.

on the back of the receiver there are 2 holes marked squelch.
so i thought id tweak them a bit as transeurope sugested.
i took the dust covers off and, wow! there are 2 holes and nothing in them.you get a small plastic screwdriver for the squelch but what your meant to do with it god only knows.
