Okay, the reason I asked this was because a friend of mine asked me to help get him gigs for 20% so I said "sure"..... then I got to thinking... damn, I could just start up a lil' business and do this for other DJ's I know.

I started this thread because I was wondering if any of you knew the proper way to do this sort of thing.

but it's okay though, I'm figuring out things as I go along.

I think that there is a world of difference between helping a M8 to get more work, where you are just "managing" or "representing" some one person, compared to handling the work of several other roadshows on a commission basis, I think you'd fall under the Agency banner rather than a promoter.

I think the law is changing with regard to this sort of work, at least the DTI was mentioned on one of the earlier threads.

I'm sure Mike would be happy to clarify a few points on running this sort of business.

Read the Employment agencies act 1973 ( 1976), the employment bill 2000, and the yet to be revamped, Employment agencies acy 2003.
That should keep you busy for a few months (lol)

Business Link have several helpful subjects. They're "Guide to setting up a business" is a must in my opinion. It takes time to read it all, but at least it gives you all the things to consider.

I promoted a night called "club funky" back in 1995-1998, we were runners up to Cream at the BEDA awards 3 years running, CREAM had a massave budget we didnt, we also did launch partys for Ministry of sound albums and they came to us to do our club night birthday party.

Was all good fun but promotions is not as easy as it sounds...........

getting 1500 people to drive the length of the country to come listen to your DJ's is hard work nomatter who you are.....

and you wont get rich from it......

Good luck if you do! and if you want some ideas then just ask.

agreed with marky..... promoting club nights is great if you have tons of dosh behind you.... the people I know who have promoted their own nights have lost tousands on some occasions.... you book the dj.....he does his set.... but there aint enough people to cover his/her fee... or the hire of the venue/flyers/promotion etc etc etc..... nice job if you have won the lottery and havent anything better to do!

If I won the lottery I would stay well away from anything/body.

Reading the original post I don't think he wants to hit the bigtime, just 9 or 10 local DJ'S, although unless you have just started out then the majority of your work you should be able to get yourself.
