Could anyone suggest some popular 70s soul songs. I'm just wondering to see which I have and don't, the ones I heard of and haven't etc.

So if you could list some popular 70s soul tunes that would be great! notworthy.gif

here we go,

"Soul" means differant things to differant people, I and of course Eskie will be able to give you lists of 100's if not 1000's of tunes.

Do you mean the sort of soul music that Joe Average wil know?

Or do you mean the type of Soul that a hardened soul music fan will like?

Joe Public soul is Barry White, candi Staton, Gloria Gaynor, Odyssey, Kool & The Gang etc

If you mean hardened soul music, these days they use the term, check out any of the soul togetherness albums for some essential tunes.

Or if you are in striking distance of Essex on August Bank Holiday Sunday then I am playing a soul gig in Wickford.

Oh and then don't forget the Funk & Jazz Funk tunes of the 70's

let me know and I will supply some sort of difinitive list
Digital discos
well i was after 70s soul tunes but NOT joe public ones. I don't want really really unknown stuff just sort of common 70s souls tracks whether it be jazz funk one etc but not Joe Public style.

One of my fav's!!!

We used to do a 'dance routine' of sorts to this years ago....... rolleyes.gif

Yes - excellent list Ian.
DJTREV
Thats not the first excellent list you have supplied Ian.I am still looking for most of the other ones.
I would imagine that the chances of getting many of these is fairly remote too.
I know this goes against the grain on this site but me thinks that Kazaa will be working overtime. 221.gif 221.gif Unfortunately I dont have that facility anymore- my PC had heart failure and I lost lots of stuff during the ensueing(?) surgery.

Easy peazey!
Gracenote/CDBB smile.gif
Eskie
One other place to hear some great soul is Solar radio, although it's only available at the moment on Sky or on the web http://www.solarradio.com/
The great thing about Solar is that unlike most stations they don't use Playlists, so you don't hear the same songs over and over again.
brianmole
Bimey Ian, what a list!

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa

And I thought I was the only person on earth to posses a 12 from the pitted face of Manu! Quality...
Ian Stewart
if looking for 70's soul stuff, try Gary at Crazybeat Records, as most of this stuff has been released on CD
DJTREV
Paula you are a little treasure.Just had a look at Gracenote and tried the demo.It might be just what I am looking for.Made one or two cock ups on the way but got there in the end.
paula
scared.gif Me!!! A little treasure! huh.gif Some people would really doubt that! tongue.gif

Ian Stewart
I have recently bought yet another 70's soul CD, with some raremodern soul clasics on, ie from the 70's great tracks from warner record
Mary Wells
Gerals Sims
Jean Battle
Ben E King

to name a few

Its called "you better believe it"

martink
Jazz Fm do play some great bits, I definately don't listen to the radio enough!

Ian, don't know if you've spotted these on a CD comp anywhere: Reuben Wilson 'Gotta get you Own' and Johhny Hammond 'Shifting gears'?

I've got Hammond on Vinyl (somewhere) and I've tacked Wilson down on Vinyl, but would prefer just to nab 'em on CD.
Eskie
You can find the Hammond track on the Sampled series; it's on vol 4.
'Sampled' is a series of albums which has originals of tracks, loops, songs used in ads from recent years. Most of the originals are old soul tracks from the 60's & 70's and they sometimes have some classic stuff. As far as I know vol 4 is the latest album.

and you can get Reuben on Street Jazz vol 1 which is a comp that was released about 3 years ago, I would lend you mine, but I feel you've got to get your own rolleyes.gif

Thanks mate spot on and already tracked on Amazon.
martink
While I wondering round Amazon, anyone care to name some decent Jazz funk comps?
Ian Stewart
just try the Mastercuts Jazz Funk Series the 6 CD's pretty much cover everything
The Moog
Such good advice, Ian felt he could say it twice tongue.gif

I'll second that..... the Mastercuts Jazz Funk range are excellent CDs cool.gif

Good quality, solid tracks from the genre without being too elitist or too commercial, as is the case with just about all of the Mastercuts range in my opinion (I especially like the house range at the moment).

Intelligently compiled collections overall notworthy.gif
martink
The Master cuts are decent, got one of the 80s groove ones the other day.

I'd been after Rose Royce 'Magic Touch' fro a while, my copy of Streetsounds had seen better days!

Also had Cash Flow 'Mine all Mine' on. Ah, the songs of my youth 014.gif

Picked up one of the House ones a while back. Primarily because it had Mac thornhill 'Whose gonna ease the pressure' on, tune!

The Hed Kandis are also pretty good for older house/dance bits.
born2rave
hi guys not been active lately but came back to the site as have been asked to do a soul/mowtown gig 12th sep, now i know there are some soul/mowtown specialists out there 042.gif and the debate bout what is/isnt, soul/mowtown could prob rage forever wallbash.gif but i just need too know that if u got the general spread of top 20 hits from 70's/80's even some 90's approx dozen soul/mowtown cds, would this satisfy the general soul loving community, and lastly is there any tracks that are must haves wacko.gif oh and def lastly would i get lynched if i played northern soul stupid.gif or is this something completely different, i know it is different, but is it acceptable. thankin u all in advance beer.gif
Eskie
How well Northern Soul will go down depends on the crowd you have and the area of the country you're in and the age group.
So it's extremely difficult to answer how well it would go down.

As for the must have's to
QUOTE
satisfy the general soul loving community
this again would depend on whether we're talkin about the handbag soul lovers or people regularly going to soul gigs?
Some Must have's for Handbag Soul would include:
Candi staton-Young hearts,
Emotions-Best of my love,
Cheryl Lynn-Got to be real,
Luther-Never too much,
Rufus & Chaka-Ain't nobody,
Jocelyn-Somebody else's guy,
Mary Jane Girls- All night long,
Earth wind & fire-boogie wonderland,
Hues corporation-rock the boat,
Rose Royce-carwash,
Trammps-Disco inferno,
plus throw in a few from Shalamar, Kool & the gang, Evelyn King, Barry White, Stevie Wonder etc.

If it's people really into soul then avoid anything from Bee Gee's, 80's Kool & the gang, 80's earth wind & fire (The 'I Am' album excepted). Throw in a few tunes such as
Gwen McRae-This love I'm givin,
Marlena Shaw-California Soul,
Bobby Womack- How could you break my heart,
some Roy Ayers, some Maze, some James Brown/JB's/collective such as Lynn Collins, Bobby Byrd, Fred Wesley etc,
Bobby Caldwell-what you won't do for love,
Archie Bell-Don't let love get u down,
Curtis mayfield-Move on up,
Tammy Payne-Take me now,
Jon B-Don't talk,
Lucy Pearl-Don't mess with my man,
Rhythm factory-African rhythm,
Shuggie Otis-Inspiration information,
Gloria Gaynor-This love affair
and loads more. Hope this gives you a few pointers?
born2rave
