I used to have live Chat sessions on my main website 2 times a week. This worked very well for quite a while, with an average of 20 people in there all "chatting" in real time. I eventually got fed up and abandoned it, due to lack of time, and moved onto this Forum!!!.

With several people on this forum at any one time, would you use the chat facility to enable you to talk with other people who were visting at the same time?

For those of you who don't know how this works. A chat room is a place where anybody visiting the same "channel" or Forum in this case! can meet up and actually have a conversation in real time, by typing in whatever you want to say. The advantage of this is that you can have an almost unlimited virtual "Conference" of many people all taking part and viewing the same conversation.

It would only really work at scheduled times, say twice a week, so everybody could get together and basically join in the chat. The busiest times seem to be Saturday between 1AM and 3AM and Weekday Early Evenings around 8 or 9 so we could perhaps schedule one chat session - say Saturday 1AM and Wednesday 8PM - just an example. We could even have a discussion theme before each chat session - such as PLI, Lighting, Agents, Starting Out etc.

Unlike the dodgy chat rooms you've heard about or conventional IRC (Internet Relay Chat), this would be a web based system which wouldn't require you to access the world of IRC or download complicated software onto your pc. You would just access a URL and sign in - similar to this Forum.

Obviously we would need to moderate it, for safety reasons so I would need the help of at least one other mod during each session .

Let me know your thoughts on this. The current use of the forum P.M system shows that you lot do want to talk to each other!.

The only concern that I would have is that any usefull information that is covered in the chatroom, scrolls off the top a few minutes later.

Whereas, on the forum, such information, which new members of the forum might find useful later, when they join, is there on the boards for them.

Fair enough, if your a member when the chatroom is running, you can (normally) cut'n'paste any useful information into your own notepad, or locally stored Word document for later reference. However that doesnt help you, if you missed the Live chat.

Possibly a moderator, might like to cut'n'paste the whole chat into a thread on the forum, eg: "Chat from 12/5/2003" but as chatrooms tend to flow in a much less formal way than threads do, readers would wear out their mouse mats scrolling through the camoflague, to find the useful bits IMO.

So, for the reason of being able to retrieve helpful, informative information easily later, by new and existing members, I give the chatroom idea a But would support it, if I could, if it started.

Yeah i think it would be a good idea, but i think the times might be a bit of a problem though!!!

Bit weird how its busy at 1-3am

Wenesday sounds ok but even then i cant get on as i work during that time and dont finish till 10:30pm

OKay, so we've got at least some interest . The times I suggested were just meant as an example, they can be held at anytime providing some mods are around!. I still feel that at least one late night session is in order, to allow for members in other time Zones to join in. Don't forget 2AM in the UK is only 8PM in some parts of the U.S! and I have found upto 8 members on here yakking away at 3AM!.

Yes, and the Chat Room would not be a replacement to the forum that will still be here 24/7 . I just thought that a place to chat may cut down on the amount of off Topic posts that each thread eventualy gets (See above lol) which can sometimes confuse those following the original topic

Well we'll see, but the most people ever online on the entire board at any one time was 16, so we would possibly end up with more mods than members in the chat!. It won't be an open channel on IRC so should keep away the Geeks and teenieboppers out to cause trouble.

It would however, also be open to any visiting guests.

Well I don't mind being around if i can late on Sat nights but like Paula I work sunday through to Thursday every week at residencies not getting home till bout 1230. (Which is why I am probably guilty of yakking at 3am!!)

No, it can be rotated, providing that we can get sufficient interest for each session, we can swap and change the times as often as you like. Maybe if people posted the times that would suit them in this thread, it would be a good indicator?.

I'm currently in the process of building a chat room for it, oh and I need a couple more trustworthy Mods, both for the forum and for the Chat Room
