I've just found a reasonable and cheap source of LEGAL music downloads, from American Giant Walmart. Although based in the U.S, you are downloading the material so distance as they say is no object smile.gif . Their Music may be a little behind our charts, or ahead depending on the Music you are looking for.

They also ahve albums and a searchable Artist / Title database so you may find something that you've been looking for.

Cost of downloading is $0.88 per track (about 47p), There are also full albums to download from $9.44 (£5.06).

Disclaimer:-

Legal Music Downloads are still a grey area for D.J use. By Downloading from any music site you agree that you are solely responsible for the application in which the files will be used. However, the Walmart Terms state the following:-

QUOTE
When I buy downloads from Walmart.com, what am I entitled to do with the music files?

By purchasing a music download, you are entitled to:
Download the music to 1 computer and back up music to 2 additional computers (see instructions below)
Make 10 burns to a CD
Make unlimited transfers to a portable device

thanks ive now downloaded and used ITunes now lol o well i give this a try - how can i get proof of my Downloads are all fine. Can i get hold of invoices maybe ??
Chrispy
Since they use a checkout type facility you'll probably get emailed a receipt. But if not, just keep your credit / debit card statements biggrin.gif

is it true that the music is for personal use and to be played on the computer or on a ipod/ and not for public broadcast , this is a very grey subject so it is.

thanks jonny

I'm sure when I was hunting round the ITunes store I saw a notice that said downloaded music from them was only for personal use.

I would get myself a credit card AND ONLY USE IT FOR BUYING MUSIC DOWNLOADS, then if something happens ALL statements from that credit card company will only have music downloaded items on it.

Also change the credit card every six months so it is harder to fraudently use it

Be careful!

If you use one PC for downloading and another as a gig machine (as I know a lot of people do)

This is what it says on the site - I think it's all to do with DRM (Digital rights management)

Quote:

Once you play a song you downloaded from Walmart.com, it will only play on that computer, even if you are able to transfer the song file to a different computer. This is because the license file (required to play the song) remains on the original computer. You cannot transfer this license file to another computer.

Having said that, if you dig a bit deeper it says:

Quote:

"Can I transfer music downloads from Walmart.com to another computer?

Yes, you may back up your music to 2 additional computers. To back up music, you will need to make copies of both the song files and license files and transfer these to the new computer."

This does look a bit complicated though!

I couldn't edit my previous post as I'm still waiting for it to be moderated!

Yes, I can see the logic in that. That way, it would be a lot easier if you ever needed proof that you had downloaded a track legally as all the music downloads can be separate from other purchases if you use a different account.

I can see that it is definitely still a grey area as to where you can and cannot use the downloaded tracks.

I think that I'd need to be completely sure that it was legal to play the tracks in public not just for personal use before downloading from a company.

If I could find a completely legal download site that allows track to be played in public, then I would definitely consider downloading tracks as it would work out a lot cheaper in the long run as I could chose exactly what tracks I wanted and mix and match eras and genres instead of having to buy a whole compilation CD which has only a select number of tracks that are actually useable.
