What do you guys think of the current chart music?
90% of my music comes from the charts but to be honest there doesnt seem to be much "disco" music these days. There seems to be an awful lot of rap and generally speaking I dont play it,hardly goes down well at aunty Mabels 50th.
While on the subject of chart music.Dont you just hate it when you go and buy a load of singles for about £50/60 and one month later the record company brings out NOW 54 or whatever with them all on for £14/99

i think R&B is getting more popular, but so is rock and pop.

I heard the other day that rap and r&b was gonna become the new pop, not surprised from the poo that britney, will, girls aloud and cheeky girls come up with these days.
Have to agree with Trev, knowing that buying loads of singles to keep up with the charts every week, then getting them all for quarter of the price on a compilation is annoying

Agreed but we have to play what people want! I loathe with a passion playing Eminem, BUT he is a very talented guy. I just don't like the flak from parents and pub managers about shite music!

| I loathe with a passion playing Eminem |
I think it's always going to be the same, there is always one genre of music which is frowned upon by the older generation, and Eminem just happens to be this generations "evil"
We laugh about it now, but in the U.S during the 50's certain religious groups tried to ban Rack 'N'Roll!!!!. Then the 60's had Pschyadelia (sp) and Woodstock = Drugs. Then the 70's had Punk and the Sex Pistols, The 80's banned Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax. All tame by todays standards and no doubt in 10 years we will look at whatever is banned, and say that by comparison Eminem was tame!.
I agree, that some of what Eminem writes for his lyrics leaves a lot to be desired, however if you do listen to them, a lot of what he says is true, and a reflection of todays society in general. He just has a more direct way of putting it
What I am sick of are these "manufactured" bands. They look good on the Tele, and so they must be able to sing. The talent out of making music has long since vanished, and it's all about making money for the industry, advertising and selling to a generation who don't know any better.
Shows like Pop Idol etc, are nothing more than a pimp for a tired music industry.

oh god , chart music where do i start... i blame it all on radio 1, they are so policically ( i know i'm slightly drunk ) correct. they love to play r n b and rap and also student music like linkin park, but any "happy " music , no way !!! i'm not keen on eminem by the way, without me was ok, but the rest , shite. until radio 1 gets its act together us mobile jocks will struggle !! i mean joe wiley, mark n lard , chris moyles ~ not exactly party jocks are they ??? i remember when it was ooh gary davis...........

I dont think it matters one bit what the lyrics are to the majority of punters;its whether you can dance to a track that matters. The likes of Eminem are shite and quite honestly I will make up any excuse not to play them.
It doesnt make any difference whether you like these manufactured bands,Kylie,Gareth,Will,SClub or even Spice Girls; as long as its danceable and fills the floor for us jocks, thats all that matters.Eminem and all the other rappers wont do that.

I will say what I have allways said Rap rhymes with Crap. How ironic.

Well, I wouldn't call Kylie manufactured - in the early days of S.A.&W then yes she was, but unlike RicK Astley, Jason Donovan, Sonia etc - Sixteen Years on she is still around and making good music. It would be interesting to see if Gareth, Will etc are still around in 1 years time, let alone 16

. and as for Sclub, Steps etc - well my point entirely, months from now they will have faded into obscurity and music will have moved on to the "Jolly Toddlers", or "Tclub Embreyos".
Which is my point, the music industry introduces one Boy / Girl band - they have one hit, or at best 3 years of music, then they disappear once they lose there appeal. All the D.J is left with then, is a box full of shiney coasters.

I didnt mean that Kylie was manufactured.what I was getting at was that it doesnt really matter what we like as jocks- its what fills the floor.I dont think it matters too much whether they are still around its what they left behind !Some of the stuff that SA&W left behind is very danceable(which begs the question-where are you now Rick Astley)and there are quite a number of reasonably good one hit wonder tracks around

I am not so sure that this is the case, I think its more a case of the TV industry calling the tune here. They saw the popularity of pop idol and its gone on from there.Look how many reality tv programmes there are now-Big Brother,Im a Celeb,Pop Idol etc

i still blame radio 1 for not wanting to play happy dancy music and instead playing boring stuff like 50 cent. some s club 7 tunes were ok, as were some of kylies, but most dance music acts are here today gone tomorrow manufactured or not, take love inc as an example, the new tune broken bones wont do anything and then they'll be gone ! i like sophie ellis bextor, shes done some great "mobile disco " tunes. things were better in the early to mid 90's ~ loads of good poppy dancey tunes around, m people, d ream, snap, black box etc...

I agree partly with this, but, there are still a lot of good bands around who make music they want to make rather than what the industry feels they should make. For example; Incognito. Many people will probably only know 1 or 2 of their songs, yet they've been around for 25 years and have a dedicated fanbase. They make some great music and have never bothered with the current trend. This is just one example, there are many other great bands in every music genre who play from the heart rather than from the pocket!
There is a lot of stuff around I'm not particularly mad about, but music has and always will be about opinions. Some choones I think are the nuts, another guy may think are complete pants.

That totally depends what part of the country you're in and what audience you have. In many parts of London if you DON'T play some of the rap stuff such as Ja Rule, 50 Cent etc you'll **** off your punters!... even at some weddings!!... but yeah, you're right they have to be danceable, and R&B & rap is just as danceable as any cheese...if you can actually dance

aaaghh! I personally can't stand Sophie EB, and think she's a stuck up hypocritical tart, but I know that many mugs...
people like her! And as for the rose tinted comments about the 90's and other era's; all Black Box did was take a great song by Lolleatta Holloway jumble around the chorus, verses etc and then put it out as their own record, with no recognition given whatsoever to Ms Holloway; what a bunch of Masturbators
There's always been loads of crap records, ever since music was put onto plastic, and there's always been loads of good music around, it's all a matter of opinion
Well, I'll now come down from my
and put on my flame proof jacket and wait for the replies from all the people I've just coated off

Going back to the original comments.
The current chart as with all charts is dependant upon personal taste and for my tuppoence worth it's not very good. I hate the american ghetto rap stuff. How many of the current tracks will be all time classics not many i'll wager.
With regards to buying new tracks and them being out of date, have a word with Chris, he may be able to help you with some of the promo discs available these days. I get the Mastermix Pro Disc, well worth it for pop/chart tunes

it looks as if youre calling me a mug eskie !! sorry i should have said i like sophie eb's music and not her . i've never met her so i dont know what shes like personally ~ but i dont really care , all i said was that shes made some good "mobile disco" tunes and anyone who runs a mobile disco will know what i mean. Also about the rose tinted glasses bit - no way- the early to mid ninetys were the dogs b******s, as for blackbox, i think lolleata holloway was very happy that tune came out, it boosted her profile and made her loads of cash, in fact i think love sensation was re released as a result of it. + like it or not it was clever what they did with it - turning a , lets face it average tune, into a world wide smash hit and one of the biggest floor fillers of all time !! But lets not get too serious about this subject, oh and by the way i never play macarena, ymca, uptown girl unless asked, oh and i like incognito aswell _ anybody remember a group called innocence, they were another of my faves.....

Jeff,
No wasn't calling you a mug mate, a lot of it was tongue in cheek
Re. the black box-Lolleatta thing, Holloway only started receiving money after black box were threatened with legal action. They initially gave no credit to her whatsoever, even though 'Ride on time' consisted entirely of her vocals. She 'eventually' made a good few bob out of it, but it wasn't exactly due to the good intentions of the Italian dj behind black box!

yep, they were... in your opinion. What I was trying to say is that it's all about opinions. Other dj's will say that the 80's was when the best tunes were coming out, some will say that the 70's were kicking, while many others will argue their case for the 60's/motown/atlantic etc.
I had a little dig at Sophie EB earlier, but if a misguided punter
ask's me for a track by her, of course I'll play it; unless of course they 'demand' that I play it, then well, "sorry it's scratched"
but that's another subject!
