Full Version: Promo Only or DMC DJ Only???

Gary
I've been looking at the current offerings for new music compilations as CDsingles are poor value and time consuming, downloading from LEGAL professional music sites is about 4 weeks behind the shop release date, and retail compliation albums are too infrequent.

Ive been looking at DMCs "DJ only" CDs and the offering from "Promo Only" although there seems to be alot of remixes rather than straight "radio edits"

Im slightly hesitant about going with "Promo only" for some "in the past" issues, but that wont affect my overall decision, if they are currently offering a better product/service..

Use the following link to mastermix cd's i really rate these look at the pro disc, which are all radio edits ahead of time

I'll second that by OG the Pro disc series do tend to be ahead of their time but not too far so people ask who the F**k is that??

Hi Gary,

I believe that Promo Only closed down in the UK a year or two ago.

Personally I subscribe to CD Pool's Radio Extra (Radio edits of future top 20 tracks), Pop Beats (Remixes of future top 20 tracks), Street Beats (R&B/Hip Hop - biggest tracks tend to also be on Radio extra with the current state of the charts) and Club Beats (what it says on the tin).

They also come in thin vinyl slip cases rather than jewel cases.

CD's come through the letterbox the first week of each month, and tracks tend to be 1-4 weeks ahead of release. For instance the Radio extra from the start of May included Faithless, Kelis, The 411, Mario Winans, 2Play, Jay-Z, Supergrass, Avril Lavigne and Emma Bunton.

I personally use the Mastermix Pro Disc, but looking at this months it does look very old....

Normally its very good, but the new one for June's list is:

ANASTACIA - LEFT OUTSIDE ALONE
JC CHASEZ - BLOWIN' ME UP (with her love)
graham coxon - bittersweet bundle of mystery
drunken monkey - yeah!
faithless - mass destruction
g-force 3 - sanctuary
goldfrapp - strict machine
zeena gulzar - wanna fall in love with you
him - solitary man
joe ft g-unit - ride wit' u
keane - everybodys changing
kevin lyttle - last drop
maroon 5 - this love
morrissey - irish blood, english heart
the rasmus - in the shadows
ron sexsmith - not about to lose
joss stone - super duper love
the streets - fit but you know it
tali - lyric on my lip
tiesto ft bt - love comes again
2 play ft raghav & naila boss - it can't be right

and I know there are a few new tracks but most have been out ages.... I do like the look of the Radio Extra from Promo Only, but normally only get the Pro Disc ones..

eek The Rasmus, Maroon 5 and Anastacia. i thought these songs and been and gone.....

must be that the radio has been hammering them like mad for at least the last 8 weeks.

Hits 58 is out in the next couple of weeks aswell

That latest Pro Disc is a disgrace sadwalk.gif

I subscribe to the both DMC DJ only and Commercial Collection on a monthly basis. Usually very good given the current poor quality of the music available. Couple of interesting re-workings coming up....

Kool And The Gang ft Redman - Jungle Boogie 2004
Five Star - System Addict 2004

Bit strange really but when I look at the tracklistings for the DMC promo disc it always looks tempting, yet when I take it out with me I very rarely play more than a couple of tracks of it. I do get the mastermix pro disc but as said earlier they are bit late with some of their stuff. I've bought one months offerings from cd pool but again I can't say I've played much of it. The problem I find with cd pool is they have new releases on the radio disc and then some more on the xtra beats disc which are usually remixes going on for 8mins or so. Then you need to buy the hip hop/r&b one as well cause they usually have some chart stuff on as well, it works out quite expensive.

I'm suprised at the Mastermix Pro Disc track listing too! Are you sure that's not last months disc?

I find that the Radio Xtra disc covers 90% of what I play on mobiles. The Pop Beats discs give you club remixes of many of the same tracks, as well as a couple of dance-pop tracks that aren't on the Radio Xtra disc. The Street Beats (hip hop/r&b) discs may have a couple of chart hits that aren't on Radio Xtra, but most tracks are less chart likely.

So if you're a mobile looking to keep cost down, Radio Xtra is best value for money and pick up the few tracks it misses when they come out.

Yes the Five Star track was on the last CD Pool Pop Beats disc.

Just to add that the new CD Pool discs are out this week:

Full track listings can be found on their web site, but the most commercial disc, Radio Xtra, includes new tracks from Mcfly, Speedway, Janet Jackson, Will Young, Black Eyed Peas, Cassius Henry ft. Kanye West, Beverley Knight, and Busted.

What is an inproper DJ then ?

After 20 years I class myself as a proper DJ, I work mainly weddings which pays more than if I were to be in a club every Saturday, I therefore own more gear than a 'proper' DJ and probably more music, in fact I carry about 7000 tracks with me every weekend, if we say that each track is £4, thats £28,000 worth of music, along with about £15,000 worth of kit, so I have about £40,000 tied up in my business, I therefore class myself as a proper DJ and I am again reminded that most people regard mobile DJ'ing as a hobby for a bit of cash cough cough, I think of myself as a professional company with professional standards and would therefore like an apology for calling me, and 90% of people reading this, 'not proper DJ's' because I don't spend money on CD's I will not use, OK I am sick of hearing Robbie Williams and Kylie every weekend but if my customer want that and they are paying good money, then they get Kylie and Robbie as many times as they want. Anyone else agree ?

Do you REALLY feel the need to justify yourself to somebody who has obviously joined the wrong type of forum??.

I dont beat mix, i bar mix so i must be an improper dj and i really dont care what mr pleasure thinks rolleyes.gif
kazzachi
i play what the audience want to hear... not what I want to hear....so im with you andy! And lets face it, its not the end of the world if you havent got a track which isnt on general release for a gig - so why pay silly money when you can get by for a couple of weeks anyway!
The Moog
sad.gif Why do I miss all the really offensive posts whistling.gif

Anyway..... that was a fair point raised in the previous post. Sometimes very few of the tracks on the pre-release disks go on to be hits and as a result, never get asked for. In these cases, it can prove to be a waste of money paying the £18 (normally £20 but it's cheaper on subscription) for the DJ only discs.

However, building on an earlier post, it is satisfying when Joe Punter asks for a popular track that has not been commercially released and you have it to hand thumbup.gif I just make sure he/she knows what an effort I have made, "just for them". tongue.gif

Likewise, if a track becomes popular that you would never think of buying normally and it is on one of these discs, that is also deeply satisfying!

Well, we all have to get our pleasures somehow drool.gif
