Hi Everyone

Please do not accuse me of having librararian tendencies but.....

I am trying to organise me collection into types of tracks but not necessarily the type of music (it may be) but more the mood /pace of the song and the effect it has on the dance floor

Has anyone tried to come up with a useable collection of keywords eg smoochy, background, never play, reggae smooch, reggae dance etc. These samples are not necessarily good or meaningful just ones oive thought of by example, but it might be useful to get a discussion going on this and then come up with a set of keywords that a few of us could use, understand the records that could fall into each category and then use the list for the future - it could be a sort of series of code words only DJU members know what they are - exclusive to us!

Am I barmy or has anyone else had similar thoughts or already done/attempted to do this.

I know you can't easily pigeon hole songs but I am going to have a go and maybe assign BPM ranges to each to help benchmark at leats the fast and slow tracks

By the way - the "never play" may arise because although its a dance record there could be a huge silence at some stage in the track which makes it unplayable in full on a dance floor

SHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Heh heh heh

I once asked a friend to catalogue some vinyl for me, I came back to find nice tags such as "All the S*H*I*T.............. and "Stuff we never play" ............ Slow Shagging Music etc ......

I never asked him again!

Slow shagging music, I prefer fast shagging music myself.

I organise mine into genres & eras. I haven't thought of any other way to catagorise them. BMP sounds a good idea.
I also have a section for songs that you will always need just so they are pretty easy to get my hands onto them.

Come on guys, be serious!

I am genuinely looking for real ideas here so if you can't contribute something useful, go to general chat!

It may be that there's no simple answer, so I may just have a go at setting up a list myself and e-mailing it to (only) those that want to think about it seriously

So if this was to be a library - get thinking and SHHHHHHHH!

I find it causes problems when music gets put into different directories. I have all my music in 1 folder. This way, if I change folders, I won't have the problem of music not playing because it can't find the track.

I use a seperate (paper) based system to sort the music. I have lists of music that are fast/slow...etc. Therefore, I refer to the lists for the genres... and then just play the song, knowing that the software will find the track.

I have an MS Access database that I have all my tracks entered on. At gigs I have an old laptop with a exported MS Excel version of the database.

I can sort, by year, genre (eg Hip Hop, RnB, D&B, Cheese etc) and my special coding which really relates to BPM.

In addition to the song titles I put any related words to help me search in the future eg "discovery" for bloodhound gang.

That's a good idea, I have been toying with the idea of doing something similiar myself, I guess the best way to do it is either to add a yes/no field into the database for each category (so you can filter for all the songs that fit a certain category) or just add a Memo field and put keywords in.

That wouldn't help me while on the road though as I only have a paper copy of my database that shows song title, artist and what CD it's on - handy if anyone asks for something I don't know if I have.

categorise in genres/years.... works for me... do what suits you best though.
