Hi, I've been doing a regular friday at a pub in town for the past two months or so and it's not that busy compared to a saturday evening. The guy on the saturday plays all the cheesy wedding type music and it goes down a storm, yet me on a Friday tend to stick to current chart, r&b and new stuff. Is it the change in peoples working patterns that makes Friday the quieter night because they've got to be up in the morning or should I follow the dj on a Saturday and play some cheesy tunes. I just thought it would be better if I played something a bit different on the friday than on the Sat. 533.gif

I think that you should stick to what your doing and try and make it work before copying the other guy biggrin.gif

Most clubs have a different clientele' on a Friday than a Saturday. Sometimes the whle point of having different D.J's on different nights, is to have differing music styles and personality smile.gif . Otherwise it would make more sense for them to just employ one DJ to do 2 nights.

If the management aren't happy with what you are doing, then they'll soon make you aware of it. I'm guessing that you are getting different people in there on Fridays compared to the other D.'J's spot.

I agree with above.

Different types of people do go out on Fridays compared to Saturday, I found this out the way you are finding it out to, play what you are playing at the moment, the punters are in there drinking and if, as Chris says, the managemnet didn't like it you would soon know.

Do your own thing.....but just look at your crowd. You will soon tell if you are getting it right!

Well, pretty much everyones saying "do your own thing", and...they're not wrong.

This is obviously at least a slight concern for you, else you wouldnt have posted the question.

I agree with whats been said above and can only add the following.

Consider trying a "cheesy wedding music style" section to your show...dont refer to it as cheesy of course...call it "A slice of Classics" or something, just for 20 minutes per week perhaps.

If its an established, friendly bar staff who the punters know...get a "classic" request from them each week, especially from the head honcho/boss/landlord and most definately from the gorgeous bar maid....once the punters know what she likes to relax to, they'll all become fans of the same.

Also consider word of mouth advertising of "Friday nights at the..." at your other local private gigs (not while DJing at other rival venues of course).

Also, you're right to consider "patterns". Try to note punter patterns. Do all the older people drink up and leave as you start playing certain types of music, or only at a particular time? Do you get a tidal wave of punters in at 6 minutes past 9, when the bar that is 6mins walk away finishes its "happy hour" at 9pm? Does your venue lose punters the moment the locl nightclub doors open? etc etc

Absolutely, you can just about set your watch with the sudden exodus of people.

I agree with all the replies, I'm wanting to diverse slightly from the usual Saturday night party tunes, it's just difficult when we live in a small town and there are'nt alot of bodies about. I can understand Fridays being a bit quieter than Saturdays but at the moment its terrible. We've got some great offers on drinks so all I can put it down to is the music. I have posted a thread on here already about the indie/rock idea and I included some of the tunes in my set, but when people walk past and your playing some dodgy indie song to half a dozen punters it does'nt look very inviting. Yet Saturday night I'm stood outside talking to the doorman whilst the dj is belting out something like "the cha cha slide" and people are passing saying hey its good in there lets go have a look! Do you know what I'm getting at? wallbash.gif
