What fun that is gonna be this Sunday!! Gonna have a room full of R'n'B types wanting to kill me as I am playing S Club 7 fear.gif

Hmm Tricky. I once had a similar task when a local trouble spot (cunningly disguised as a Pub!) changed management and they set to change the clintele' to that of a more family orientated venue wacko.gif . If I said it was easy then I would be lying, to change a pub, which previously had a live music only policy of Indie and Metal, into a family pub is a challenge not only for the Manager but for any entertainer foolish enough to be within range of a flying beer glass.

It took a long time, but they did change the venue around, and its now a "Millers Kitchen" with little entertainment and a wacky warehouse tongue.gif - now you can't get anymore family orientated than that!, so it is possible.

I would advise that you ask the management of the venue to add the fact that it is no longer an R&B night to any advertising or posters that they have around, this should advise a percentage that it is not the usual night.

Also make sure that there is a poster clearly advertising your Non R&B night close to the disco, then if people complain then you can point to the poster and say well sorry, but this is how it was billed and you are purely their to provide a service as instructed by the management.

At awkward functions such as this, I simply point out that I am only following the instructions of the client / manager and that I am perfectly willing to change the music policy providing that the person who booked me comes and confirms the decision.

It may not be as bad as you seem to be anticipating, so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Just ask them (management) to change the posters etc

I know where your coming from the same thing happened to me I got a gig every thursday night in a nice little STUDENT bar fear.gif
where there previous dj the famous JUKEBOX (which was full to the brim with indie/metal music) The management decided he wanted CHEESE oh dear. unsure.gif
well I was worried i didnt have a dj box to hide behind when s club 7 came on, oh no they placed me right in the middle of the students where i had to set up my gear. 1087.gif well I did manage to turn around this pub and much to my supprise alot of the students did come back, biggrin.gif which was a good sign. But i will say one thing just because you have to play cheese dont be afraid to slip in a couple of RnB/hip hop tracks it wont hurt you will not only keep the management sweet but the old RnB crowd too anyway enough said good luck let us know how it goes thumbup.gif

It will be ok don't worry too much......... at the end of the day try to keep management happy, the regulars and yourself too its a fine balancing act but provided the 'take' is going over the bar you will probably be left to your own devices. All they care about is profit and enough to justify paying for your services.

isn't down loading great for that kind of thing, remember years ago you would have to go round the record shops trying to find out what mix it was and then pay 6.99 for a us import 12" single !!!

I did a mid-week residency at the South Bank university in sarf London a couple of years ago, which was the opposite of this topic title, i.e. the previous dj had been playing a lot of cheese, but the vast majority of the students wanted R&B, Rap, Reggae & UK Garage and they wanted absolutely zero cheese.

It wasn't too much of a problem changing things around, plus many people into the above mentioned types of music are far more vocally expressive when they hear their fave tunes. However there was a small group of die-hards who still wanted the cheese and every week they'd give me hard time about how they wanted cheese, so eventually one week on the way to the gig, i stopped at Tesco's and bought a pack of dairylea, so when they walked in i gave each of them a triangle tongue.gif

I've found that people into R&B etc are far less tolerant of pop/cheese etc, than the opposite, ie the people into the pop/cheese will accept a few R&B tunes, but the R&B fans get the hump at hearing ANY cheese.
