Anyone familiar with a piece of software called Cool Edit 2000?
I use it to edit mp3's, normalise the levels, add loops, delete spaces at the front/end of tracks I've converted from my old vinyl etc.

One problem I've found is that every now and then on an mp3 track, when you try to open it using:

"Files of type": "MPEG 3 (FhG)(*.mp3)"

in the "Show file information" it will show:
"Unknown headerless RAW data".

If you try to open such a track, a window will open asking:

"Interpret sample format as:"

with a list of sample rates from 192000 through to 6000, with the standard 44100 being highlighted/default,
it also asks what resolution is required, with the options being 8-bit, 16-bit & 32-bit (float).

The default is 44100 for sample rate & 16-bit, if you then press 'OK' on these settings, you are then taken to another window:

"Raw data (no header)"

"Data formatted as"
with the option of choosing the following:

16-bit intel PCM (LSB, MSB)
16-bit motorola PCM (LSB, MSB)
8-bit mu-Law compressed
8-bit A-Law compressed

the first one (intel) is highlighted. If you press OK again here the file then opens but is basically just a wall of sound, no peaks, no music, just noise.

I'm able to play these 'headerless' tracks on musicmatch, real player etc, so they are mp3's, but for some reason they don't have a header.

Hopefully some of this will have made a little sense to at least someone on here?! blink.gif
If so, could you let me know is there a way to edit an mp3 file with 'headerless data'

Cheers,
Tone

Hi Eskie,

I run Cool Edit Pro, unfortunatly it dosn't work with MP3. I have to convert the MP3 to .WAV, do the biz and then convert it back, a bit of a pain, but it works well.

You want 8bit mu-law - 44100

Hi Mikee,

I tried opening as i explained in the original message and then selecting 8bit mu-law - 44100
but it didn't open as a playable file. sad.gif

You mention that it has to be coverted to wav and then edit as a wav file and then convert it back to mp3. I've never used cooledit to do that. Could you let me know how I would go about doing that?

Cheers,
Tom
You cant use cool edit to convert mp3 to wav you have to use a stand alown program (winamp will do it not great but it work, there are may more just look) as for opening mp3's in cooledit get the plugin that should allows you to do what you are after.

Does anyone know a programme that will convert mp3<->wav in decent quality?
The Spindoctor

Nice one Spin. I downloaded cdex, and was able to convert them instantly, then edit the files in cooledit, and convert them back into mp3 using cooledit.

You may have heard of Soundforge, Software Audio Workshop and similar progs to Cool Edit Pro /2.

When I get similar probs like the ones mentioned, Soundforge is great for editing and converting all formats like .wav to mp3 to .raw etc.

Cubase5, like Soundforge, will let you time - stretch files (input correct BPM at source, though) and edit files.

You may have seen the trial period shareware progs on the web that allow .wma conversion to .mp3.

Winamp is a handy little ID1 & ID2 Editor too, but it comes down to taste.

CDex has improved a lot since it reared it's head as well. wacko.gif

If you look at the PC computer mags, you can normally find a free disc utility that lacks looks but works great for all your needs!!!

Tom
dBpowerAMP is the best for converting wavs to anything or anything to wavs or anything to anything.

there are loads of differnt converters for it, ogg, mp3pro, FLAC, mp3 lame etc etc

editting ID tags is made easy too batch converting is a doddle for both audio and tags

nice one, get it.

You CAN use cool edit to do this but in order to convert a multitrack into an mp3 i.e. an mp3 that maybe you've added stuff to or edited you need to save it as a *.wav then reopen it in waveform view and the resave it as an *.mp3 this will then compress it to a nice small *.mp3 file not a huge *.wav file.
