You shouldn't be applying to PRS, it's for venues / premises only.
You can get a "DJ" licence from PPL, but thats only half the story.
It is illegal to play music, other than from the original purchased CD

I did gig last weekend in a permanant fixed marquee, at the end of the night I was paid £100 but I had to pay £10 to the owner to cover my PRS license.

I would have got him to invoice me, or give me a discount for cash !

Cheeky Blighter Loz... had he told you about this beforehand? I know many djs state on their contracts that the hirer is responsible for assuring all licenses are in place... hope you havent been taken for one!

Hi
I was always under the assumption that a venue, i.e. pub club etc should already hold this licence and venues like village halls and any other place where music is going to be played/performed, if it's for a private party, you don't need the licence anyhow. However if it was an open to the public event in the vilage hall, then you'd need said licence.
However, I'm happy to be corrected if I'm way off the mark here.

PRS, is a venue based licence, even shops with "muzak" playing need one.
The only licences we should have to worry about are PPL, MCPS, VPL.
(VPL is for kariwhatsitsname)

I don't know what the set up is, as it's not my regular venue, I was covering for the resident DJ there. I did a do there last night (Sat) in the banqueting suite and got paid my normal fee. I've told the DJ and he's going to have the word, the strange thing is he's recently increased his fee to play there by a tenner, sounds dodgy to me.

..now go and put the wind up the guy Loz... tell him you need an invoice for the £10 and a copy of the licence...after all you have paid for it!...... You could see that tenner again !

The DJ PRS licence allows you to play music via a computer, provided that you have legally purchased the music (as apposed to using eg KaZaA to download music).
