Hi,
Just been testing my new gear i bought last weekend. (was away though so didn't get chance to test proper until tonight) I bought a soundlab 500watt amp and some 15" speakers. one of the speaker sounds really dodgy with the bass. I'm gonna take me back tomorrow, but hope he doesn't accuse me on blowing them or owt. I know i haven't! but would both speakers have blown if this was the case? Just want some info incase he trys to fob me off. hopefully he wont, but yoiu never know....
Just out of interest the speakers i got where the ones he had on display in the shop. was i foolish for accepting these ones, or is it the usual way these shops work? When i look at the dodgy speaker in more detail, it does look at little bashed on one of the corner metal pieces...
any comments or advice would be much appreciated! I'll be taking em back tommorow morning. Incidentally this is the same guy that said i should drill a hole in my soundlab smoke machine to make it work better (if you saw my earlier post)

Cheers guys!

Kathy ;-)
ps just plugged my normal house kenwwood amp in and my 150Watt ac outics solutions speakers in and it sounds soooo much better than the new stuff, even though this is meant only for in house entertainment....... new speakers must be rotten i reckon.....

The Soundlab Speakers aren't so bad really, they are budget ones obviously, but one of the better speakers in this price range. Are they the Red Speakers with the Silver Grilles, or the black carpet covered ones with the full length mesh grille??.

I doubt that you've blown them, if you haven't taken them out on a gig yet.

What Mixer are you using?, and what model of Amplifier?

Thanks Paul, but I was thinking more along the lines of the Series of amp - I don't trust some retailers wattage figures - they have a tendency to get verbally exagerative when it comes to sellling amps and the "500W" could be RMS or peak. If I got the model number i.e "Soundlab SP500", then I know exactly what i'm up against fear.gif
kathyshack
sorry yeah its a soundlab sp500 amp and the mixer is a KAM GM25 KMV.
The speakers are the black carper covered ones with full metal grid. I did like th look of the red ones, but the guy said the horn wasn't as big so i would be better witht he black ones.

I know i haven't blown them as i have been really careful with volume as only tested them in my house. Just hope he will take them back. he shoudl do really but as i'm not expereinced in this matter, he may refuse, i dunno.....

when you buy speakers do they give you the ones from display in the shop generally?
Chrispy
Okay your speakers are actually rated at 200W RMS, the 500W is a peak figure. These are perfectly okay for use on the SP500 Amplifier, I used to sell the same combination of Amp & Speakers as a package. Just don't go connecting the speakers to anything more powerful than the SP500!.

Not generally, although this practice would be perfectly acceptable, if he discounted the price to that slightly lower than BRAND NEW ones, and he pointed out to you that you were buying them as Ex-Demo or 2nd hand. I assume that you knew which ones you were buying at the time of purchase?. However, if you requested new ones, and he took them out of the shop window and they had obvious signs of previous use, then I would say that you had very good grounds for complaint. However, if you bought them, knowing that they were 2nd hand, or ex demo then you can't really take them back on this issue alone.

Was there any form of gurantee given with the speakers?. Usually dealers will give you some form of warranty even with 2nd hand or ex demo goods. 30 - 90 days is usually average.

It is possible that there is damage to the driver, did you hear them working in the shop before you bought them?. It's always a good idea when buying anything 2nd hand - especially speakers, amps & mixers to actually listen to them before you buy.

How did the speakers sound when you first hooked them up?. Distorted?, Too much Bass?, Too Much Treble?. Is there any loud "cracking" noises when you turn up the bass?.

I'm not familar with that Kam model of mixer, can you tell me whether it has EQ (Bass & Treble) controls for the music?.

Cheers Chris,
The speaker weren't suppsoed to be second hand, but after taking them back to the shop it appears the assistant gave me one old one. The guy was was very applogetic and gave me another one no quibbles.
Phew! sounds sweet now ;-)
As reagrds my mixer, its only a basic one which cost aroun £50 18 months ago. If fact i am considering gettin a new one as this one has no mic input and onlt two inputs. Alex (my husbad who dj's with me) has a dr sample which he would like to use. He was talking about maybe geting some kind of junction box to add onto the system, but it think perhaps we should just get a new mixer with more inputs etc. I must admit though the ones i have looked at look a lot more complicated to use.....

Thanks again anyway, chris, much appreciated.
ps is your shop a physical shop or do you just operate online? Reason I ask is that my friend live in Biddolph which is somewhere near. Thought we might have a nosey in your shop next time we were around

Chrispy
Yep Biddulph - just up the road from me. No I don't have an actual shop, been there done that etc etc. I now operate purely online - keeps the overheads down. Although you welcome to collect any orders, or I can arrange to drop them off at you friends in Biddulph next time you come down this way, - I go that way when I go into Stoke and should save you a few ££ in carriage smile.gif .

Glad you got the speaker sorted out.
