Recently I went through my entire back catalogue noting low bit rate albums that need replacing.
I came across some real gems that haven't had an airing for awhile mostly 70's and 80's tracks, I stuck them all in a playlist for reviewing later.

This got me to thinking what songs say in the last decade will stand the test of time, sure you have
Lady Ga Ga. Black eyed peas and Cheryl Cole but after 2 months they are forgotten and its on to the next Xfactor winner or novelty pop act.

Sometimes I think to myself why am I wasting my money is it worth buying to play a dozen times, I know im providing a service and have to cover all genre, It just annoys me this throw away culture with it's plastic pop.

WHERE HAVE THE REAL ANTHEMS GONE. ranting.gif

One song has made me play it on repeat at home Sex on Fire.

What will be played from the 00's in 20 - 30 years time?
I hope you guys can prove me wrong!
DJMickeyk
Killers - MR Brightside

Valerie - Amy Winehouse version

I can honestly say I have downloaded many tracks at a euro a pop in the last few years and never once used them at a gig. Thinking from now on I will download only the most popular and then top up with the Now series as they are released.
Wayne 74

Kaiser Chiefs - Heard it through the Grapevine

Green Day - American Idiot / When Spetmeber Ends.

Cheers,

Wayne

But do you still play them now and will they be played in 20 - 30 years time..

Have to agree Mr Brightside is a proper anthem
vokf
Some Bands are producing songs that will last;
Take That - Shine
err..
Eminem -Stan
Arctic Monkeys - Most stuff! lol
Robbie Williams - Rock DJ
Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel like Dancin’

There are lots of "good" tracks about, but these are normally good to listen to - not to play at a gig.

Checking the Top 40 - its pretty grim, all very "poppy", and not much still I'll be playing this time next year.
If you consider who is buying the music (apart from DJ's biggrin.gif ), it'll be mainly young Radio 1 listeners!

For us, It does vary with the gigs we cover. I will happily play "skater boi" after "Pink - So What" at a 13th- for some, this is their "amthem".
I rarely get out for a decent night out - nowdays. In my bad old days, I'd be hitting the town, pubbing and clubbing to mainly 90's club stuff - for me, thats my time. So tracks by alison limerick, k klass etc are my anthems.

Hopefully this is not a sign of getting old! lol

I do prefer a wide mix of music, so some guitary stuff, but also modern club/house.

I also think when it comes to the charts, dj's purchases shouldn't be counted!

(That in my opinion is how Jedward got to number 2, or at least how I justify in my head!)

I can safely say I have not got nor will ever play that track.
As the Avatar states Against Manufactured Pop

I wonder if we will get a remix of the remix of the remix of the remix of the Queen classic, another one bites the dust. You never know Jedward may make a guest appearance covered in tatoo's looking like they have suffered from years of the rock and roll lifestyle!

You really cant tell what will sit at the top of our playlists for years and years, only time will truely tell. Who would of thought Journey - Dont stop believing would have made such a comeback.

Possibly Killers, maybe some Christina Aguilera, Girls aloud or sugababes could even be some Justin Timberlake.

One track i will play for the rest of my days is Alice in Chains - Check my Brain but thats just me. Im probably the only eejot who has Ugly Kid Joe - Hate Everything about You on his ipod

I used to keep up with the charts. Now I don't bother.

Virtually all my work is weddings and I rarely, if ever, get asked in advance or on the night for anything in the current chart.

I've decided to buy the Now albums in future (not necessarily each one) . At least it's cheaper than downloads.

I'm beginning to wonder if, because I'm older (potentially out of touch?), current stuff seems like rubbish.

Alternatively it could just be rubbish. It's mostly exceedingly unmemorable.

One other observation. Depending on who it is, a lot of live performances seem heavy on spectacle and presentation yet low on real talent and musicianship.

Nope you aint alone Dave

It's not that I hate 00's music some is tolerable, the likes of Beyonce and Robbie Williams (lifestyle permitting) more than likely will still be singing in 20 years time. But I agree with Vokf the top 40 is a total mess I made the mistake a few weeks ago with trying play a set straight of off the top 40 list to a young crowd, to be swiftly asked to play 80's and 90's. Even my sister in law who is 15 and her friends listen to more 80's and 90's stuff they have no time for most of the current UK chart. Who is buying this stuff?

Sub teens.

This really depends ..

I do pub residencies mainly

i have a young venue hotel on a Thursday lots of requests for chart stuff and songs not even released from a 19 -25 year old dominated audience

friday its a mainly older people place where 70's 80's and 90's are the main stay

my once a month residency is young chart stuff mixed with the classic DJU top 60

Sundays at my new residency is 50's 60's 70's ..I was playing a song from 1977 and i got asked if i could play something older than this modern stuff! on went chuck berry and buddy holly ..not my usual area of songs at all and i felt a bit out of my depth to be honest but they asked me for a regular spot so i must have been ok!

Functions in between its the standard DJU top 60 and the odd chart song

so for me it depends on the audience and the venue

The charts have always been the same some good tracks and lots of one hit wonders and fads , not just the modern charts

I dont tend to play from the 60's
Anthony Newley Why?
Ken Dodd Tears
The Allisons Are You Sure?
Ned Miller From A Jack To A King
Dave Berry Mama
Des O'Connor I Pretend
Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus

All big hits in the 60's charts

or the 70's

Neil Reid Mother Of Mine
Gary Glitter I Love You Love Me Love
Windsor Davies & Don Estelle Whispering Grass
Father Abraham Smurf Song

again all big chart hits in the 70's

etc etc The current charts are no different in my opinion there are some tracks that really work and i know will be with us a month tops then out of fashion and others that will last longer and very few that we will be playing in 30 years time.

The current chart is what the 60's 70's 80's 90's and 00's chart was to that young generation and just as exciting to them as our decades.

I am glad i don't just do functions as i could see that without my finger on the pulse of current charts i may lose my passion for the current chart.

I believe the word POP in pop music comes from the word popular , if it is high in the charts it means despite me or you not liking it , many others do.
I personally can't stand manufactured cheesy pop like Glee songs BUT if that's what my customers request to sing on karaoke or as a music request that's what i play.

I had a singer sing hallelujah after Alexander Burke of x factor released it three nights a week for six months , I had dreams where i heard the song , i couldn't stand that version but as i say its not what i like its what makes the customers happy.

personally i feel the charts have there place as one of many tools at my disposal and buying tools and equipment is part and parcel of any business

I dont see it as waste buying chart tracks ..this week there were only three new entries so its hardly going to dint the income of what many say they charge... a small price to pay to be prepared properly

just my 2 cents worth

D.X
I did a wedding last weekend and played nothing released in 2010. Had 2 requests all night, Fight For This Love and Footloose by Kenny Loggins. Everyone seemed happy enough, lots of positive comments. I've only bought about 10 tracks all year and wouldn't play any of them in my bedroom.

Just to confirm.....its rubbish not your age.

I do find that the typical 30 something weddings are demanding a slightly more modern approach to music along with the classics but have to say the 80's are firmly in the lead. The trouble with the now cd's is that they are too slow on releases. I will pick up now 75 but most of the tracks are played to death and are yesterdays tunes and to be honest i have had to buy most of them on i tunes as they came out.

Buying.......thats optimistic.....the younger generation have the likes of spotify and all those web sites that are not even worth mentioning, saying that i suppose someone is actually buying it.

i refer to it as kiddie pop as thats all it is really. It gets hammered at school disco's etc but get beyond that and its 1 in 10 in comparison to the classics.

Im looking at subscribing to cd pool radio and hits after easter which is £250 a year but you get 2 cd's (40 tracks) per month. I will look at my accounts first and see what i spent on downloads to do a comparison but at least the cd pool discs will have a resale value.

True, but in the decades you mention sales were a lot higher. Today it's a case of (not so) many others.
do.

Have to agree Mr Brightside is a proper anthem

Still play both those all the time, in fact I call these songs my get out of jail mix, if i have a dead dancefloor or if the crowd is slow to get going I play:

Mr. Brightside
Sex on Fire
Valerie

in that order, guaranteed to fill any dancefloor over here in ireland, wedding or youth disco doesn't matter. Reckon they will stand the test of time, I also get asked for Beyonce Crazy in Love and Outkast Hey Ya all the time, years after they are released so that is probably the best of the manufactured type pop of the 00's, I also think Eminem will still be on the radio for many years to come. It's not my type of music but I will always play to the crowd and will play any reasonable request and try to avoid letting my ego run the show. I play a wide range of venues from youth clubs to 50th birthdays weddings and anniversaries so I need to be up to speed on every genre. I would have to agree that the 00's have been kinda poor for chart music, X-Factor type rubbish is everywhere, 80's and Motown are really where it is at still for party music you can't go wrong with those two genre's.

Think that may be an idea for a thread, 3-5 songs that us DJ's play in a row regularly that mix well together? Or has that been done before? newbie here
