Hi, have just a quick question. I own all my CD's none of which are copid, however i have a few good remixes which other DJs and myself has performed on the pc. Is it illegal to burn this to disc and use them, if you have the original version of legal discs?

Thanks
Chrispy
Now thats a tricky question smile.gif . I don't know the answer to that one, i'll let somebody else have a go at this one!.

Another very grey area... I have been told that if you remix a track then technically you own it.. however, there is always the question of did the original artist give you permission to remix their track! A dj/producer mate of mine may know a bit more about it.. Ill ask him for you!

I'm of the impression that if you want to make a recording (or in this case a re-recording) of someone elses material you must have their agreement (in writing) first - this includes sampling parts of a song.

You have to get permission i am afraid

I think i may of given you the wrong idea.

eg:
If i own Fatman Scoop (original edit) on legal disc? is it illegal if i burn
Fatman Scoop (crooklin clan remix) onto disc?

or

Dirrty (original) and then
Dirrty (DV8 remix)

both of these tracks i own on legal disc, only the remixes are impossible 2 get apart from on the internet. I didnt make these remixes by the way.

Indeed a grey area but i think you must have to have the original artists permission to rmx a track, hence it wouldnt be legal to burn the rmx to cd.

Im just looking at it in the context of the many bootlegs / mash ups that get released, often on white labels but when all original artists are contacted and a commercial release is put out (roughly a year after the initial hype of the tune!), the version is much different.

This is often due to the fact that the original artisits havent granted permission so have had to change it enough not too infringe on copyright.

Hi

All true, copyright issues will remain in force until permission is granted from the (original composition) recording artiste.

However, when 'celeb' club DJ's are openly broadcasting on National Radio (The Essential Selection, 'Usual Suspects', January 16th 2004, BBC Radio1) the fact that they have prepared CDR's for their gigs - the mind boggles.

It's the old argument on airplay of 'bootlegs' and 're-mixed' tracks.

For private or promotion use only will only 'cover' Private useage!!!

Public airplay (of said tracks) in a public venue could invite inquisitive ears from the grey-area brigade enforcers, working on behalf of the M.I., seeking royalties.

But without the 'remix' and 'bootleg', the Music Industry would be a lot more boring than it can be!

I have both the remixes you metion and im a bit collector of remixs and bootlegs but technically they are illegal but prob as illigal as doing 33 in 30 mile per hour zone yes the police could arrest you for it but its very rare!

If they keep clamping down on drivers, we'll all have to pust all the gear round on hand carts.
I supose the only pluss side will be we won't have to pay a fortune in car insurance! laugh.gif
