Hi guys,

Ive nearly got everything ready for my re-launch into mobile discos, and currently have a nice aluminium goal post stand. I think it is about 3m wide and 2m tall maximum. The tripods can also be used as T-bars.

For my lighting, I am going to use 4 NJD Datamoons, and possibly some sort of centrepiece.

Anyway, as I will be working on my own I was thinking the goal posts and t-bar might be tricky to set up by myself so I have been looking at winch up T-bar stands which would be much easier to set up.

So, my question is - do you think a single winch up T-bar (with the 4 datamoons) would be sufficient for a mobile disco, or do the paying public expect more metalwork!

Do any of you experienced DJ's use only a single lighting stand for all of your gigs?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers, Mark.

You will get a mixed response.

I use both a 3m gantry and and a stand alone T stand. For 80% of my work the T stand is sufficient and will happily take 4 decent lights such as the datamoon type lights that you mention. Even with a large gantry, I would only take 6 lights with me.

4 decent lights on a t bar would be good enough depending on your venue. a 3m gantry can look a bit ott in smaller rooms and to be done neatly takes some time.

with the t bar you could always floor mount spare lights if you have them

Exactly as Norfolk DJ says its about what the perception of your disco is by the booking client.

The answer is both

I do consultations with my customers I have pictures of a t bar and a goal post stand and show them the difference and suggest what would be better depending on there venue budget and type of party they are trying to hold.

This way if the client is up for a big light show and effects you can price them accordingly if they only want a small light show in a small venue then a T bar is spot on and so the cost will be less for the quicker and easier set up.

i would say that 4 data-moons and a centre piece are a heavy package so make sure your winch stand is up to it as is the goal post too.

It is not our opinion of what would look ok for the disco that matters... its if your customers are happy with it and to do that..... just ask them.

hope this helps

So what does a set of 4 par 56 cans count as? one or 4 fixtures? :)

sorry but the old joke, the dj cant count past 2, is needed here.

I would say 2 datamoons and 2 scanners on a t bar would be a good standard setup. At least you get some static patterns and movement with the lights.

I have a 3m gantry which has not been out of the house for 18months and use my 4' giraffe with overhead dj stand all the time.

Thanks for the advice!

I think the answer is to stick with my 3m gantry and T bars for a while and see how it goes. I will just have to stand on a chair etc to set them up ;o)

I have a Kamstand and considered the version with the overhead lighting bar, but as I have no amp (using Mackie 450's) I thought the set up might be a bit top heavy with 4 Datamoons on the top bar.

I guess 2 winch up 2 bars would be the perfect (but more pricey) solution as I could use 1 for smaller gigs and 2 for larger gigs, but as my budget is already exhaused I will probably leave these purchases for some time in the future.

Cant wait to get started (again) now, and will post some pics etc of my set up after the first gig.

Many thanks, Mark.
